CV Axle assembly

Well, after 128,000K on my 94 GXE, the drivers side rubber boot on the CV slip apart, I guess from old age, I picked up a re-manufactured one from Advance Auto for $65.00 after core-return. I will be installing it this week, the passenger side one looks & feels in great shape, to I will let it stay for now, a competent mechanic told me that it should not take longer than 1/2 hour if you know what your doing, anyone out there have replaced this part before?

Well i hate to break the news to ya,but on automatics, the passenger side axle must be removed first before the driver side, then you need a long screwdriver or other suitable tool to knock the d-side shaft out from the passenger side hole..

The rest of the info for removal of the cv shaft is in the repair sticky..

http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiB...rGuideYMMEYear

SIDE NOTE: Don't forget to drain the tranny fluid into a suitable container before you start the shaft removal...

i'm going have to disagree here. you CAN pull just the DS axle out w/o pulling PS axle out. get a pry bar and pull it out of the tranny.

also make sure you have a socket big enough for the nut at the end of the axle.

IF the nut is the same as the rear - it should be a 31mm socket - I had to pull my drums to replace the shoes and had to rent a socket set from oreilly's.

you don't have to remove the passanger side axle. Just the driver's side a good sharp pull and it'll snap right out. Make sure you drain your tranny before that though...

Thanks for the input, but after looking at the sticky from Autozone, I think that I will have my mechanic install this CV assembly, looks way to time consuming since I have never done one before. Question: How long can you drive on with a broken rubber seal on the CV joint?

I have driven for thousands of miles with broken boots without problems, but eventually,water/dirt will destroy the cv joint and it will start to clunk around corners...

I agree on the axle removal...no need to remove passenger to remove driver side. Dude if you got time and want to learn I'd suggest to do it yourself, plus it'd be cheaper and you get to bond with your vehicle Oh be sure to to inspect the axle seal (ugh) if it doesnt seem all torn or bent just leave it alone.
All tools you'd need would be:
Jack/jackstands
14mm
17mm x2
19mm
36mm (axle nut)
nice prybar (set preferable)
Pliers to pull cotter pin
Torch (optional)
Thats all I can think of tool-wise but that should pretty much cover what you'll need.

separate the pass side axle from the bearing carrier. once it's loose from THAT then the axle will slide out also.
there's 3 10mm bolts on it..then take a nice big hammer and spin the bearing side to work it out. total PITA.

After reading these threads, I have come to the conclusion that God put ASE certified Mechanics on the beautiful planet earth just for these types of problems........that we non- ASE certified humanoids may encounter!!!

Lotta shops claim to be ASE but its just experienced mechanics. Is that scary enough to get you to DIY?

I should be fine for a while,it takes quite a while before a nissan cv joint completely fail...

I wouldn't do any honda civic challenges at the stoplight until it is fixed though..

Thanks all!
