1989 5 speed. Stopped at a light and car stalled. Everything else still running but tried to restart and nothing. Tested fuel pump and power at pump - fine.
Changed relays in trunk. Checked fuses - fine. No fuel getting to filter and pump not running. Baffles me. Jack Pearl

How did you check the pump?

when you turn key to on (not start) do you hear the pump cycle for 5 seconds? Or is it silent?

Nope, that's the fuel pump pressurizing the system. It'll happen even if you shut off the radio (or at least it should).
I don't have a power antenna anymore. After the third time it pooped out I replaced it with a manual one and threw the auto antenna in the dumpster.

Ok, I finally got a day off of work.

I did not test the pump myself, but a friend jumped it off of a battery. I also have another working pump out of a parts car that did not work. The pump is functional. I replaced the relay located in the trunk- nothing. I replaced the emergency shut off in the trunk- nothing.

The car showed no signs of a problem until the very moment it quit running.

I would like to run a diagnostic on the ecu, but I am having a hard time finding it due to the fact that the sorry haynes manual is so vague.

I just don't think it is fuel related. I really need to fix her this weekend because my old a$$ truck is killing me during my hour and a half commute, so give me some ideas if you can.

My wife originally started this thread, sorry it was so vague.

So what you're saying is that the pump works when jumped from outside the car, but won't run when hooked up to the car's electrical system? I'd start using a multimeter to check for power in the wires back from the fuel pump to where the power starts. Also, check the fuel pump fuse. Check the fuse with a multimeter to make sure it doesn't just look O.K.

I have tested the fuse, also there was gas in the tank when I had the pump out. I have tested the harness and there is proper voltage at the fuel pump electrical connection.

I am stumped right now and I really don't want to go shooting in the dark at random sensors and such. Any more ideas?

What exactly does it do when you try to start your car ? Does it crank and nothing happens ? Does it not crank at all ?

It is probably not fuel related if what you checked has been correctly done.
Is there fire ? try cranking your car with one spark plug out touching the engine, if it does not spark, maybe your coils are bad, check for cracks, or maybe your distributor, or rotor are bad, opened them up and inspect.

Did you checked the basic, such as your pump fuses are working?

Since you said you checked the pump and found out it was working. Did you recently drove over a large rock or any object? Sometimes, doing so could cause the line to get smashed and completely blocked the flow. Check your lines. Also, if you had changed your filter, rubber, or metal lines....make sure you connect return and feed lines to its proper location or you will not get gas at the filter.

also try changing your fuel filter, you might have some rusty line that dragged all the debris into its fuel filter and congressed it.

Hi there
Not sure if this will help but my car is having a similar problem.
Just recently my car has been just not starting... it turns over, and over, and over and over but doesn't start.
Sometimes I just have to leave if for about 5 hours and it'll run (most of the time that DOESN'T work) but one way I've found which works 99% of the time is
Remove your fuel pump fuse, it's located in the fuse panel on the drivers side under and to the right of the steering wheel.
Once the fuse is removed start turning over the engine with the accelerator about half way down... you may need it down further (even fully pressed)
Once the car starts it'll run for anything from 1 second to about 15 seconds.... just KEEP THE REVS UP!
The car will probably start miss firing due to not enough fuel and eventually it'll stall.
Now put the fuel pump fuse back in and try and start it (again with the accelerator pressed!) and keep the revs at about 1500 minimum for about 20 seconds...
Now it should be running... probably still misfiring every now and then but give it a minute (of driving) and it'll run fine.

USDM maximas are left hand drivers,the fuse panels are to the left of the steering wheel over here..



It maybe the fuel injectors seals or the fuel injectors themselves are leaking fuel into the cylinders,thus flooding the engine out after it sits for a while..

Thats exactly the same problem I was have a while back, check the O-Rings on the injectors.
