92 auto tranny problem

my buddy drives a 92 qxe or gle, not too sure, but in order to put his car in drive, he has to go down to 2nd, then it just moves into drive, with out clicking. is this a really bad thing? car still drives fine and he has no problems. thanks

The shifter bushing is worn out. I have the same problem. Going to fix it as soon as I get some free time.
