Is this normal in the cold?
Hey guys, I'm a little concerned and wondering if my car is supposed to sound like this when I turn it on..it only makes this sound for like 5 seconds after I start the car and I noticed it only in the cold.. here's a video.

btw the suction noise in the video isnt a vacuum leak, its cuz I accidentally put my finger over the mic on the camera

ha mine use to make that same sound till I started doin oil changes at 2500 to 2800 miles inted of like 3000 or 3500. So idk? Wat kinda oil do u use? I always get GTX High Miles or QuakerState High Miles and always 5w 30 weight.

I do my oil change every 2000-2700 miles and its not time to do it yet.
I use Castrol GTX 10w 30 summer and 5w 30 winter but ever since this sound I'm thinking of going 10w40 summer and 10w30 winter but then again I dont know if its something inside engine or exhaust leak as brian said..
I just got my studs done..wtf?

My car does the same thing. It only started happening after i put 20w50 in (in Aus its a fair bit hotter so this is generally ok to use) i have just bought some 15w40 synthetic oil and will see if it does it then. Another user on maxima.org.nz had the same problem using such thick oil and when he changed to a lower weight the noise went away.
Believe it or not when I ran 10w-30 upon startup from a cold start I used to hear the lifters for several seconds until the oil got up to that part of the engine, since I only run 5w-30 now, I don't hear that anymore at all.

Its only been 1500 miles since I changed my oil and filter so its definately NOT time for that
Hopefully its not time to pull the heads either. If it was a lifter wouldn't it make that sound all the time instead of just 4-5 seconds after a cold start?
problem is I'm sure with all the miles on car oil pump is worn and oil passages not as clean as it's taking a few more secs to get oil up top..last thing to do is rev it on start up...going to a synthedic oil will allow for faster flow on start ups...quaker state wouldn't even be a choice...try some mobil 1 10w 30
and a amsoil oil filter or a K.N part #hp2008 both work good....amsoil is by far one of the best oil filters on the market..hastings make the filter for them

John its lifter tick, no worries.
Theres a cylinder shaped thing between the valve and rocker arm that comes off the cam (the rocker arm is actuated by the cam and pushes down on the lifter). The VG's lifters are hydraulic which means they are self adjusting.
What happens is they get dirty and collapse when theres no oil in them and some times it takes a while for them to build up pressure like when your car is cold and has been sitting.
Id poor 1/3 to 1/2 a can of Marvel mystery oil in there, and 150miles before the oil change add half a can of seafoam. It'll really help after you change the oil. I do that every time I change mine and it helps my KA run alot longer.

Well do you guys think my engine is doing this cuz of driving on "2" instead of "D" when my tranny was bad? Yes I was constantly on 4-5k RPMs, I drove with messed up tranny for nearly 1 to 2 months before I replaced it
