I have a 90 SE, can I use the maf adapter from a 95-99? That's the only kind I can find here locally.

94maxshima, what causes that ticking noise? My car sounds just like that but I can't seem to track down where it's coming from.

You know that's mostly just the camera; in real life there isn't much ticking at all. Haha, that camera makes my car sound like a piece

But if you do have a ticking, I'd say it was probably broken exhaust manifold studs... what kind of gas mileage do you get ?
If not that, then probably sticky lifters, what weight oil do you use/ oil filter. I (surprisingly) switched over to a walmart filter recently and the slight lifter sounding tick it did have went away completely...

I installed my pop charger this morning. I really didn't feel any difference performance wise but my gas mileage has gotten better. I really like the sound of it. I can't wait to put my exhaust on.

That's a pretty neat idea! So if your going to connect your 3" flexible coupler from pipe to filter, which filter model did you used to fit? I assumed your using 3" diameter filter instead of 2.75" but which cone filter model was it that works for you?

Yeah, you gotta keep those temps down. A cold air intake will definitely help.

I just have a cone filter with the stock midpipe since I'm always changing track intake setups and working on my car.

Hey, pretty much any filter will work; I used the one that came with the kit since my old 3" was a bit dirty and couldn't afford a new K&N at the moment. But just to clarify, it didn't go...

pipe; flex-pipe; filter.

I cut a 3" portion of the pipe (2.75") that I didn't need and stuck that in the filter and tightened it. Then connected the flex hose to the piece of remaining metal sticking out of the filter... that way it would not be so hard (under the car) to connect a flex hose to the filter.

So depending on what size piping you have to fit in the filter.... go for it, since flex-hose is um... well... flexible

If you rarely hit 4k RPM's, then what's the point in the first place ?

It all depends on what you want; HAI for high end (Interstate) and CAI for low end (City)

I liked the CAI much better, it did take away very slightly high end but low end had a noticeable increase when I got on it.

New VE has a CAI and wouldn't go any other way.

I stay less than 4k because I cannot stand to think about 60% more fuel per min going into the injectors, and usually L.A.'s 405 (5 lane, X miles parking lot), 110, 105, and 118 freeways don't demand high end rpms.

I can go 70-75mph on about 3k

I'm not an engine guru (yet) , but What gives you more hp and/or more gas mileage?
Wiki said HAI gives you more mpg (Can I trust that?)
Wiki said nothing on CAI.

I will do research on the engine later, when I get my own house. But the Information overload with ambiguity Superhighway isn't always the way to go.

"A teacher is [sometimes] worth more than two books"

Thanks for the help. I'm not post whoring right? This will help newbs like me decide.

Also what gives you more combustion power, more fuel or more (dense) air? There is a reason why it's not 99 to 1

NOTE TO MODERATOR:
We need a stickie that lists the benefits per mod in our cars, Including all aftermarket mods.

Under normal, regular, and consistent driving conditions; both setups will give you very slightly better gas mileage.

In horsepower; the CAI is the obvious choice because it is drawing colder, and denser air into the engine, while the HAI is thin, hot air directly in the engine bay. But if you usually drive on highways I really don't think you'll notice that much either way. Also, for the VG... the CAI is much more work to get installed.

ORLY? Why? I installed the WSP CAI on my VG and it was pretty straight forward, just a hole for the tube to install the filter in the fender. What is so much easier with the VE?

Well, if you feel like spending the $150 to $175 on a VG Warpspeed CAI then I guess you'll get better parts and easier installation. But I was kind of talking about a Do It Yourself CAI for the VG. I bought a 93' Accord CAI w/Filter for $22 shipped off Ebay, after seeing Heresmymind's setup. I had to trim the fender pipe a little, get 3" flexible tubing, make a hole for the tube to fit in the fender, etc. All I did with the VE was cut a little to make the hole...

I personally thought it was more work, but it was still worth it.

I understand. I got my WSP CAI for $150 when they were moving to the new shop last year. I considered the ebay route but you do get what you pay for, and ease of installation and quality is worth the extra coin...to me.

But if you are willing to do the extra work go for it.

a couple shots at various stages of my VG. It was originally intended as a true fender-well CAI, but it's cold here most of the year anyway lol, so I just left it.

Don't make me 'out you' Brian lol. It's red I tell you -- it's RED!!"

and I made it myself...

The intake I did with an 'illusion' paint. Depending on the angle you are viewing it at, it is either fully green, purple, or both.

I've got a bunch of that wire in the garage from several cars I've stripped over the years.

Don't know really where to put this, so I figured that this thread was close enough.

http://www.cosmoracing.com/

they have ram air (HAI) and cold air intakes with filters for our cars. plus its not bad pricing either.

just another option for the max, other then WSP/Stillen kits or DIY one's.

how often do people move the battery back and run the CAI in front of it (specifically in a VG)

Haven't seen it done... on a non turbo'd VG anyway... Possibly a trunk mounted battery on a n/a VG would give a lot more room to work with.

i just meant swapping the battery to the stock airbox position, and putting your cone filter where the battery normally sits.

Ok, im new to this whole modding thing, so what is a "pop charger" and wat does HAI stand for? CAI obviously is cold air intake.

a pop charger is an HAI, and HAI stands for hot air intake. for example, in a GXE or a VG engine, all you do is get a cone filter and a MAF adapter. screw in the MAF adapter where the MAF would screw into the stock intake box, and tighten the filter to the adapter. thats it.

and if you have any questions about abreviations, just go to urbandictionary.com, if you dont find anything, then just ask someone.

K fellas, For the VG, doesn't it make sense to just go straight infront of the battery instead of all the way around. I know the MAF sensor wont reach that far, so just splice and make some wires longer. How bad do you think those bends (through some pretty hot parts of the engine) hurt performance??? Thoughts on this...

I looked at this option for my wifes vg,the biggest issue imo is not the maf wiring harness, but the relay box in front of the battery would be directly in the way of the pipe path, also the large relay box would very difficult to relocate due to the large amount of wires going to it.
