bro go buy the nissan maxima repair manuel for the 3rd gen and it shold tell you exactly where to do the timing from but if you have the ve dont even bother with it cuz nissan has seem to make it a point not to include info on the ve motor in the repair manuels unless you go to the nissan dealership and get theres cuz i had the repair manuel and it didnt have anything about the ve motor in the maneul i bought from auto zone. if anyone can tell Guns what the correct timing mark iis on the ve's if he in fact has the ve please add to this lolz. sorry bro that is all i do know right now im in the process of learning about ignitions and timing right now in my college auto tech course but havent got there yet.

Here's I'll be nice unlike elusive..I wont send ya to buy a Nissan Maxima Manual, elusive you mean mean meany!

should be 4th mark FROM the back(firewall)

(firewall) | | | | | | | (headlamp)

in other words, starting from the back moving to front would be in this order
0 5 10 15 20 25 30 degrees

hope that helps

ya my school has all data to its the **** but i gotta remember when i goto class so i can print stuff

thanks colombian i have it set 4 back ATM so that's 15 good. under load the car still wants to backfire/stutter it sounds even though the timings right.. ima check the plugs but they are new NGK 55's

I did open the dist when i took the intake and such to inspect it see if it had water or anything in it.. was clean so i put it back together how can i tell if i need a new dis and is there a certian way i gotta have the disc inside it set or does setting the timing like i already did fix that

Qell did you have to tilt the whole distributor ALL to left of the right in order to be on the 4th mark? cuz from all that I've seen it should be center-ish dont know if that has to do with the disc question.

I also played with the disc inside not knowing it'd mess my time up..the disc will only turn if you have the distributor pulled out therefore the gears at the bottom of the dist wont be locked in the engine. I had to find the right timing by pullin the dist, turning the gear a bit then putting it back and check the timing and once it was in the markings ball park I tilted it until it would be on 15-17 degrees and having the dist centered since 15-17 is pretty much half of 30 which is the most you can go

well generally the distributor is ok unless it's making A LOT of noise or if the drive gear is broken.
if it's back firing then it's worth it to change the distributor cap and rotor with a new OEM pieces. they are pretty cheap tune up parts and would save you a lot of headaches.

i assume you gapped your plugs correctly..also your wires are in good shape?

when you say disc...i assume you're not talking about the part under the metal cover inside the distributor that you're not suppose to take off right?

the plugs are reused ones i dunno how long they'v been on the car but the ends look fine and no burns on them.. the plugs are gapped to .40-.45 the disc that has 360 little marks yes i didnt take it off just messed with it apon moving the dis to the side NOTE I never took it off the car i just slide it..

I could do cap + rotor for about $30 but before I took the intake and such off the car wasnt backfiring it sat for eh 3-4 months thats it and it idles @ 800 RPM when it warms up no surging or anything at all as soon as I get some more brake fluid in it and bleed the brakes im gonna run a self DIAG i on the car

LOL all of the manuals available for our car including FSM didn't described it accurately. But fortunately, Columbian came thru

Today the g/fs father and I did a few things to my g.fs max cuz I changed the injectors on it on 1/2/07 and it was starting very bad and the timing was way off..I tried removing distributor again and spinning then re inserting to see if the timing would be closer to adjusting but didnt work too well. So today he grabbed a socker and 1/2 drive ratchet and started turning the pulley to bring the marks up and set it to dead center as he said then put the distributor back in and cetered it. The car revved fine and power was back, so I guess thats another way to make sure you got your timing right.

btw thanks for them injectors Brian, just gotta change all them lil vacuum hoses now.

Hey gun, make sure your vacuum hoses are all good or your car will sound and idle like crap

ya me and 2 others have checked the hoses i replaced a few.. did that while doing the tune up.. the car shakes alittle bit for being a quiet V6 but its dead on the 4th mark and idles @ 800 all day long

You don't really need college to figure out your timing. Just set it where it runs the best and doesn't ping?
