Just about everywhere I go to tank up, pump states "Product May Contain Up To 10% Ethanol By Volume." What is this new mix doing to the injectors on out rather older 3rd Gens? Sometimes my mileage is above 300 mi Per Tankful, or under.....is this Ethanol Related?

 

Yes. Unless your running boost and running E85, ethanol is the worst additive ever. I cant remember what it does to emissions ( I dont think its good) but its bad for MPG and power. And its more expensive to make, further driving up prices.

And thats for most cars. For us 3rd gens, it kills injectors. YAY for retarted legislation....

I hate that crap. Luckily my new daily driver is diesel so I dont have to worry about it. I get 20mpg which is good considering its a full size truck.

Try to avoid the 10% stuff as much as possible.

 

screw the environment, avoid ethanol at all cost!!! 2 problems:

1. our engines system are not ethanol ready. if your fuel pipes are rusty, it will corrode them even faster and before you know it's gonna kill and leak, injectors included too.

2. you will lose 25% MPG, don't try to save your money.... just stick to 100% dino juices.

 

i waz gonna ask about that.... the gas stations in my area have all switched over to 10% ethanol added. I did notice that Phillps 66 is 10 cents cheaper with the added ethanol then mobile and shell. So ive been fillin up with Phillps 89 octane but have been gettin horible gas milage 255 off full tank.

 

It gives higher octane, and often costs less (89 octane vs 87). It contains less engergy than gasoline, so you get less mpg. It also has a higher risk for water contamination-that is the one of the reasons gas prices went up when the EPA required a switch in some states/cities for ethanol being added.

 

E85 FAQ

Ethanol isnt bad, its a decent way to boost octane. Burns cleaner, cooler, and is cheaper than gas. Downside is that it doesnt give you as good of gas mileage since it is less "powerful" than gas compared part for part. There shouldnt be any noticable difference though with a 10% mix. Any more than that, and fuel management becomes necessary as the car will run too lean. The common thought is that ethanol will deteriorate rubber seals, fuel lines, etc. however there is not much evidence supporting that. Your car shouldn't have any problems running it.

 

The addition of Ethenol around here seems to be seasonal, primarily for the winter months. I noticed a drop in milage of about 3 MPG this past fall on my new Highlander. I asked about it when I was in for the subsequent regular service and the service manager confirmed that the Ethanol is the culprit. I am all for the environment, but screw this. I drive about 30,000 miles a year so that ethanol is costing me approximately 178 additional gallons of gas a year! You're telling me that helping the environment???? I'd rather put more stock into more advanced ignition systems (ie ULEV).

Brad- I'll agree ethanol isn't that bad but they are using the wrong way and really killing gas mileage and giving older cars problems. It should be choice to use it not forced on us.

IMO all cars should be tuned leaner and ran on regular gas. This ethanol mix is crap.

How much would you guys say e-10 drops our milage (VG) percent wise? What could I do to regain that milage or counteract it if there is anything?

 

I've noticed a lot of gas stations didn't stated whether they had 10% mixed or not. Anyone here awared of any stations in S. Cali at used 10% mix? Any brands I avoid?

 

E10 is mostly found in the midwest where corn and other ethanol base products are grown.
