exhaust leak? y pipe?
exhaust leak? y pipe?
so about a week ago I started noticing a tinny rattling sound in my car sounded like it was coming from my driver side door. then one morning I fire her up with the door open and man its 10 times louder. sounds like a heatshield rattling or exhaust leak.
under the car today with the pops revving to motor so its easier to find. sounds like it is comming from the y pipe. all heat sheilds are tight. sounds like like a tin rattle or like there are pebbles in my exhaust know what I mean?
sounded loudest at the "y" of the y pipe. sooo I guessing some type of exhust leak in the y pipe. suppost to be common right?
Which y pipe should I buy? looking for replacement, but performance woundnt hurt if it doesnt cost that much more.
radiator is also leaking at top seem. anywhere I should look first?
thanks for the input.

If it isn't the y-pipe itself (usually the flex section goes out), it could be gaskets. Either the O-ring type from the manifold to the y-pipe, or the flat one between the y-pipe and the cat.
Like Tony said, the aftermarket ones are better for performance, mpg and cheaper than OEM. If you have some jack stands and a few tools, it's usually about the same price as having a shop replace the flex section.
Even if you aren't up to installing it yourself, if you search around, a lot of shops will install it for around $50.

It is seriously one of the easiest go fast mods you can get for the maxima. Not hard to install either. Should take about an hour.
Make sure you get the w-speed pipe with the flex section though. Don't know if they still make the "superspeed" model that has a rounded joint instead of a flex section. The "superspeed" needs to be tighted often or it will leak.

thanks guys, I didnt want to pick up a y pipe from the junk yard becoz it would probably rust and leak just like the one I got. Also, I didnt know how much a oem replacement part was, so thanks.
now only If my money clip actually had money in it. Just put on a front strut and new brakes in the front. Now I need exhaust and a radiator. tuition and car insurance also are due. this sucks. at least the parts are easy to replace!

Flex sections are wrapped with stainless wire around a stainless bellows which has an additional layer of braided wire to reduce turbulence or bees in the can sound, eventually even the best may fail. I am guessing if some little old lady drives the car it will last longer than someone that is using it for purposes discussed here on maxima.org. We all know what happens when you take a piece of wire and bend it back and forth a bunch of times, eventually it will fatigue and break. They are easily replaced, we replace stock ones all the time here in our shop.
We have replaced 5 or 6 that were ours over the years, out of the thousands we have sold. As well we have replaced a bunch from other brand Y pipes because we actually cut and weld things for a living we also repair other peoples stuff.
We use a combination of 16 and 15 gauge aluminized steel, our stainless pipes are 16 gauge 304 SS, when steel is mandrel bent it gets a little thinner in the bends. We still do them the old fashioned way, made affordably in the USA by certified welders with as many domestic parts as we can buy, our flanges are machined in Canada and a few of the gaskets are made there as well. They may not serve everyones purpose but they usually fit most peoples budget.
