Loud Clack+Bad Seal+Steering Drone

Few things I need to go to the shop for, or fix myself. Which?

Loud clacking. What I believe everyone refers to as ticking VTCs. This is intermittent but loud as hell when active.

Black carbon-like oily dust coming from my front bank valve cover. how bad is this? I bought the gasket set, sitting in my trunk. No time to install myself.

Loud droning when turning the wheel or accelerating. Pinhole leak? Steering fluid is good. Bad pump? Rack and Pinion?

Thought I read somewhere that it might be friction or resistance on the CVD axles. I dunno about that one but it has merit, since the noise IS constant and my mileage dropped from 310 a tank to 275-ish. I'll get my NGK lasers in there when I can get the stupid manifold off, which I figure will happen whenever the gasket set gets installed. Alot to get done at once.

Nice deal at AAMCO going on right now with that scratcher deal.. cant hurt to go try it out. PLEASE someone tell me its not my transmission causing the droning.

And I'm sorry but I have to chuckle at ppls that mess with the OE exhaust system. Unless you bored out the block, replaced some criticals, or are raising the .bar, replace with shiny new but don't change the diameters. Which made me think of a Q: Are dual pots acceptable for the VE ? Dual pots look really nice sometimes, w/an appropriate body kit of course. But I would think that the dia. on the exits would have to be a little smaller to keep the expansion pressure up at stock levels. Not putting sound engineering thought into it right now, too tired and been doing it all day long. Stupid Chevron..

is it clacking or clicking? clicking is cv half shaft. clacking? damn, I can't remember what does clacking relates too....maybe steering?

I got dragging noises while turning all the way right. I'm betting it's either strut bearing or rack. Then again, my rack is going south recently so I will do it later. It steers hard on some cold morning and making whining noises when I turn max left or right then stop. I got the parts with me....I'm too lazy to do it.

what is leaking? the pump? it's probably better to get rebuilt pump then trying to rebuilt them yourself. I don't think any of those rebuilt kit comes with new bearing or does it? if it does comes with new bearing then go for the kit but I doubt it.

....man, that's a lot of money to fix your car. Those shops are gonna charge you several limps for all that works. The steering system parts alone will cost around $400 + labor. New axle + labor is around $120-180 per side. Plus other stuffs you mentioned it, man that's gonna cost you at least $1 Grandio. If your mechanically inclined and broke like me, then why not giving it a try?

This is True Brian

I was hoping to have that cashola before my wedding in 2 weeks..

But life is like that. Besides, I just MIGHT need those two heavy articles after all. Hope the shipping is free.

For BVTran: CLACKING like a dry slapping metal on metal contact. Doesnt sound pretty but as far as I can tell, isnt impacting performance.

I dont know if anything is leaking. I thought perhaps someone would know if that sound could be caused by fluid loss in some component, besides crank oil of course.

I'm good on parts and labor. I'll pay whatever and more. And I have a mechanic that is a car freak and loves to help me fix my car for free, whatever the job is. Time is a factor right now, but I don't want to neglect my baby.

Loud clacking sounds like VTCs.

Is the black carbon oily or oil that leaked from the valve cover and attracted dust?

Loud droning when turning would be the PS pump usually, not quite sure what that would be with that noise while accelerating...

CV shafts are clunking while turning and going over bumps with the affected wheel.

I doubt its your tranny, and I'm not sure Id trust aamco. Then again both my cars are manual and thats how most of my cars will be for awhile...

People mod the exhaust because most factory cars have very restrictive ones for more TQ and less noise. The maximas Y pipe is the worst piece and replacing it will give more power every where and not change exhaust note. You don't need to over bore or stroke an engine to need better exhaust.

Great. Explain again what VTCs are? Everyone tells me VTC VTC but no info on where theyre located exactly, how much replacement ones cost, do they just need to be adjusted, and how hard are they to get to.

My guess is they sit atop the valves somewheres.

Where can I get a good Y-pipe?

I'd like to replace the outer right cv axle boot. Can I just remove the one side of the axle and replace the boot or does the whole axle need to come out, including the transmission side?

if you can disassemble the joint with the axle on the car then you can replace the boot that way.
