Is this a capacitor or resistor?

I re-soldered all of the joints but the clock and climate control LED keeps going out. So I'm going to replace all of the main capacitors.

Go a question for you guys, is the Blue circle a capacitor or is it a resistor? And what size is it so I could look up up DigiKey to order. As you could see the mine is similar to Craig Brace photo, the Red circle is showing where the 100uF melted to the that big Blue circle device. It looks like it got burned for some reason so I would like to replace it. That might be the culprit to my LED problem:

Do you guys think I should replace all the small orange capacitors too? These are the the flat ones, very small in value, usually in the nano-pinto Farad range. Should I replace the resistors/transistors too? From my experiences with other electronic devices, resistors/transistors don't go bad easily but capacitor can. So, I don't know about these car electronic devices....

Also, the rear windows defroster switch by the Steering Wheel LED went out too. That thing is completely dead. Does anyone here know if it's possible to exchange that LED? If so, what is the size/type of that LED so I could look up DigiKey?

I believe that is the clock. There is a "IC" mark on the right hand side.

With that being said, I have also seen "IC" Intergrated Curcuits, that where resister networks in a package

You only need to replace the caps not the resistors, they don't go bad!

^ You can blow a cap and it'll ooze a fluid. Resistors can be destroyed, usually when you give them too much power (wattage or voltage). You can also double-check resistors with a multimeter just to be safe.

could you guys please answer my question, is that green device under the big blue oval a capacitor or is it a resistor? if so, what type are they?

Any part marked with a "C" is a capacitor...

"R"= Resistor

"D"= Diode

there are no label on that thing to correspond to anything I know off. Not unless "62" means something to you guys? 62 was the only label on that device.

it doesn't matter what it is because its not part of your problem (though it looks like a resistor pack).

If you have the fading clock problem then just replace the caps and you should be fine.

For the LED question. Look on Craigs page for a write up I did on how to turn all the bulbs around the steering wheel into LEDs. That has the instructions on how to take the parts off and replace the bulb (or LED).

The markings on the board beside the parts,not on the parts....

The part in question is definitely NOT a capacitor OR a resistor. It is an integrated circuit and if it is bad you might as well get a whole new clock off a junk car. Resistors generally don't go bad unless they get fried by overcurrent. Capacitors go bad because the fluid in them dry out. If a resistor still has the colored markings on them that tell their value it is probably still good.

junkyard? that's the 3rd clocks I got the from the junkyard. It appears like they all got melted, all 3. Even that photo from Craig B site appears that way too. Each one would work for a week then slowly taking its own life.

whatever the heck it is, screw it. It seems like no one knew. thanks anyway guys. I'll just leave it alone. I will just replace all the main caps then. Yes, I have never had any problems with resistor for stuffs I have built in the lab so I don't know much about the quality of the resistors nissan used. But the cap seems the be culprit so far. Ok, I'll leave the resistors alone. they look fine.

it seems like no one knew? Seems like plenty of people knew that it's not the problem, but you're obviously ignoring their advice.

I would agree with Michael and say it looks like a resistor pack, but also agree that it's probably fine and don't bother replacing it. From that pic it does look like IC might be the reference designator for that part though, which would be integrated circuit. Maybe if I'm bored, I'll find one of the clocks I have in the garage and check it out later.
Just replace the electrolytic capacitors and you should be fine.

The lights in the switches are bulbs, not LEDs. You can change them like Michael did or just replace the bulb with Radio Shack 12v minilamps (search for that and you'll find the part number on here - I've posted it a lot before but it's too early to remember right now 272 1092 maybe?)

The green thing is a complete subassembly that's sealed in green goo. look closely at the side of it, and you'll notice that it's a board with many small components on it.

Cliff's Notes: don't f*** with it.

What kind of bulb does the climate control use? My clock is working fine but my climate control doesn't light up. I've searched but can't find anything about it.

auto or manual climate control?
there's lots of info about swapping bulbs in the manual, and the auto is set up exactly like the clock. It uses an EFD, not a bulb.

It's a manual control. I forgot to put that. I'm trying to find a manual for my car now.
