Honestly,i think the vtc has been like this for a long time,i have inquired many times from on here about my ve being slow as a dog with the vtc's ungrounded until about 3700rpm,then the thing takes off like you hit a nitrous button or something?[and no,it is not knock sensor,it has been bypassed for many years]..But when i ground the vtc's,my low end power returns..I have not seen any other person on here with this issue on a ve..

UPDATE:

Well after some research,i have found the actual broken piece is part of the camshaft, not the vtc...

Original pic of damage...

This pic is from my spare engine,as you can see the broken piece is part of the camshaft, not the vtc assembly..It looks like the pin on the vtc side has been pushed through to the other side...

What would cause this to happen?

Thoughts?

That's not part of the VTC, that's part of the camshaft.

K now I'll read

Just drive it into the ground. It hasn't given you problems yet

Think about it,when you are 60 years old, wouldn't you like to have a heart of a 25 year old installed?
I don't like your reasoning, I say take your wifes car

oh

I thought you were asking if I was drunk implying I was wrong about it being the camshaft

Did it have previous VTC work done? The only thing I can come up with is maybe some dumbarse broke it trying to get the VTC assembly off.

Yeah, the original owner had the vtc's rebuilt at 140k...I'm thinking they farked something up also...

Maybe they forgot to tighten the end cap bolt?

hunh?

I think they tried to use a pry bar to remove the VTC assembly and didn't know what the hell they were doing and thought that part of the cam was part of the VTC assembly

Maybe it's just the "shakin" from teh clackin causing the camshaft damage?

Well it's odd that you found that piece still there. But the prying theory isn't a bad one. Personally, if you got the piece and it runs okay, I don't see a particular problem. Especially if it's been okay since the VTC replair( assuming that's when it happened). You see any cracks around that area? It's concerning that the chunk missing is around that pin. Hope that pin stays there

Hmm. I suppose you can replace the cam. But I "think" you're supposed to use new cam followers and new journal caps? Matt would know.
