broken lug stud repair?

broken lug stud repair?

how do you guys repair broken lug stud for the front wheel without removing the hub? The back round water shield was in my way so I wasn't able to press it backward. It looks like I have to remove the hub to get to it but doing that might damaging my new wheel bearing which I don't want to go thru it again.

Here is the picture of that round water shield I referred to:


p.s. that's a old picture, please disregard the wheel bearing works.

I replaced my fronts no problem... But I removed the dust shield, donno if that made a difference.

You just need to rotate the hub till you have and opening to put a stud through.

Its tack/spot welded into place. Personally Id leave it so maybe just cut out a section big enough to bash out the stud?

I took off my brakes and bashed it till the lip of the dust shield around the hub was exposed. Then I cut the lip and it broke free... I don't remmebr and spot welds, I was sure it was just pressed in place. It's not a big deal the remove, it's real thin metal.

it's pressed into place...no welds

drill a hole in the splash shield that lines up to the back of the wheel stud. that should allow the stud to come out.

if not get a dremel and make a notch around the part where the caliper goes.

See the stud at 1 o'clock? That's where I cut a small piece of the shield away to get the studs out.

thanks guy, I'll cut a small portion off that shield so I could stick in a socket to press it out.

you said the shield felt off after you cut it off. Does that means after you took it off, then dust shield can not be reused right?

Is it possible I could cut it off enough so I could get a new stud in without discarding the the entire dust shield? I think it's crucial to have it there to limit debris from getting into the wheel bearing area.

just cut that small notch out...you should be fine.
