if the vtcs went and the chain jumped , would there be valve smack?

interlaced?

do you mean interference? Yes the VE and VG are both interference motors. If the belt on the VG or the chain (or VTC) go on the VE then the motor is toast...or at least the heads.

i'm in a race against time not to do the same on my VG. I have at least 80K on my current timing belt and a few weeks before i can get it replaced. I say "at least" because my odometer didn't used to count all the miles the car ran, so it reads 147k (67k on timing belt cover) but i figure it's got over 150K travelled miles. But I've got no real proof of variance, other than this one trip on I-540 where it skipped a whole 16 miles and counded ½ mile instead... but other than that i have no measured results. Ironically, that 16 mile trip was deliberately to test the accuracy of my odometer... while my speedo was being dumb. Speedo worked fine the whole trip but not the odometer. Ah, irony.
