Tinting Procedure and Ignition

Hey gents. I got a paranoia question about tinting. Oftentimes, because the tinting pros will need to lower or raise the windows and remove the glass, they probably keep the ignition in the ON position without the engine running for maybe half an hour or more, how ever long it takes the finish the job to make their jobs easier. Is it harmful for the ignition to kept in the ON position for a long time without the engine running, or am I just worrying too much?

they do not remove the glass

it's ok for the car to be "ON"...unless it's for a long time and it drains the battery.

IIRC the only time you need to worry about that is if it's a vehicle with a "points" type ignition. With electronic ignition it shouldn't matter.

back in the 70's you could have maybe burned up a coil but that isn't the case anymore.

Do yourself a favor and just have it done legal all the way around..Tint tickets are getting very expensive now...

He's referring to the strip across the top, not the whole thing.

As far as Will's question, don't worry about it. these guys are professionals and do it every day. they know what they're doing. plus, they're responsible for anything they do to your battery.

As for darkness, just get what's legal. you may think breaking the law for dark tint is cool....... until you get your first $500 ticket and have a cop hand you a razor blade on the side of the road.

Dude, most of us in here mod our cars ourselves,if you are going to pay somebody to do all the mods/fixes you want done to this car,you may as well just buy a new car..

In short, learn how to do this stuff yourself..

Us guys on the org don't get pulled over

But seriously, a cop isn't going to give you a ticket for that unless your being an *** hole, the cop is an *** hole, or your car is all riced up and you broke the law doing something really stupid.

I'd play it safe with the tint though...

Law enforcement in my region has come down hard on tint violators in the past few years, several of the people i work with have been pulled over specifically for illegal tint on their cars...The fines are ranging from $150-$250..and you also have to go to court and show proof that you have removed the illegal tint<----[+extra cost of having it removed]

Just not worth it imo...

Wow, didn't know tint was that big of a deal. It must be really laid back around here. I've gotten stopped like 3 times in the GXE and had 20% and never gotten said anything about it. Both of my Dad's trucks have been 20%. The VE will most likely have.....

20%

the number on the tint flim is how much light passes through it.

10% tint is almost pure darkness

yes the cops can tell...some don't care...some do.

Thanks for the replies, gents.

I'm just gonna go with a 35% tint, and think that looks best on 3rd gens - not too dark. Hell, if I'm driving a nice car, I want people to see me.

35% is a good choice. That's what is on my maxima and now my is300. Dark enough to look good, but you can still see out at night

You can do the top strip as much as you want... I don't think there is a law against that... but I assume you're talking about the top strip right? If you wanted to tint the whole windshield than you're retarded

I want to tint my car which in my case can be anything on the back three windows. I want it dark so that you can't see inside but I don't know which percentage will be enough. My previous car had cheap tint on it that was black on the outside and looked purplish from the inside when the sun hit it. I couldn't see crap out of it at night when it rained. My friends car is dark from the outside but you can see well from the inside. I think the quality of tint makes that difference, I'm just guessing here. I saw rolls of tint at wallmart the other day and I was thinking if % would be enough to make it so that you can't see from the inside?

Not really.
In Cali, ther are Specific Guidelines to, at any point, tinting the front windshield is legal. It in our C.V.C (California Vehicle Codes). Get ready to bust out a protractor and a ruler.

I suggest you get the 1000+ page book for your own state from the DMV.

I had 20% on my old max and you can still see in sometimes, and if the sun hits it right. (Probably around 50% of the time you look at it you can see inside slightly) and night time sucks for seeing out of it...and that is already illegal. I would stay away from Walmart Purple tint.

yea it says what i said the back windows can be as dark as you want but the two front passengers windows arent aloud to have any. like i said before but i heard as long as you have a doctors note saying your eyes are sensitive to the sun you can have tint in the front windows. thats just what i heard but what that tint center thing said is what i said.

Tint laws vary by state (and local?) laws. Here in CO for example, the maximum is I think 35%, and only on the back windows. That's stupid, and in rare occasions where I see a car that actually follows those laws, I laugh at it. Tint laws generally make tinting your car a complete waste of money (assuming you follow them). I went with 20% all around (except for windshield of course). I've thought about getting a 35% for my windshield, but I probably won't, even when I do get a new windshield, one that isn't starred and pitted. :\ Anyway, I've never had any trouble from cops for my tint, and I've been pulled over once with them, and just on Friday an '02 Maxima hit me, and when the cop came he said nothing ('course he didn't even mention the RADAR detector I forgot to take down XD).

In conclusion: 35% is lame, purple bubbly crap is lame, 20% is pretty tight and looks great on the sparkly charcoal gray paint, and would look great on your black car.

For those that mentioned the purple tint. Its NOT only because its cheap but because someone has been using glass cleaner with ammonium. Just wipe your tinted windows down with water and light duty soap and you'll be fine.

Just so you know radar detectors are only illegal in all vehicles: Virginia, Washington D.C., U.S. military bases.

AND
Indirectly illegal: Minnesota and California (illegal to hang anything from the windshield with suction cups; however both dashboard and visor mounting is allowed.)

So no need to get all scared and hide the radar detector as it will not get you a ticket.

I'll take your word for it, Colombian. But just because something is legal doesn't mean you want cops knowing you do it.
