Engine cuts out, fuel problem?

92VE-5, 165k miles

Car was hesitating on acceleration before. Recently replaced fuel filter, CTS, 2 front coils, plugs, 02 sensor, rear valve cover gasket, fuel pump relay, resistor KS bypass with premium fuel, and cleaned the IAAC/TB/EGR/popcharger filter. Car started to run better for a week or so without hesitation.

Today the car ran fine, parked it for an hour. Then when I started it, it would sputter and die, kinda like it does when the fuel pump fuse is removed (I replaced the fuse with a good one to be sure). Long story short, a mechanic came disconnected the MAFS, fiddled with the TB cable--no improvement. Evenutally he sprayed ether through the air filter, and the car didn't sputter anymore. So I had it towed to the shop (after hours), and he'll look at it tomorrow. Diagnostics is $72! Said he'll check fuel pressure, etc and then quote me for a fix. In the past, I did have to clean the fuel pump harness under the rear seat because it was melting/corroded, but the symptom then was no start at all.

Any ideas? I'm thinking fuel pump, clogged injectors, bad gas... I didn't get the chance to check the ECU for codes before he towed it. Thanks in advance!

I think its simpler. Did you tighten the plenum properly when you put it back on?

Last time I replaced a rear injector, I didn’t tighten the plenum hex bolts all the way and it was sputtering just like that because of the vacuum leak.

I tightened them up, but they could've loosened up over a week or so when I replaced them.

I'm about to head over to the shop and see what they've found.

Thanks guys.

Well I called back, and they said the fuel pump was not working but they are going to keep looking. I told them about the harness being corroded, and I'll guess they'll take a look. I hate having my car at the shop because there's no telling what they're doing. I don't have my FSM with me, what is the resistance at the pump supposed to be?

I'm curious as to why plugs would have anything to do with his car not running?

Unless all six decided to foul out at the same time..

My $ is on the harness plug..

Bingo! Turned out to be the melted plug which I should have replaced last time. So he charged me 72 diagnosis + 72 hour labor + 10 supply. I even told him to check the plug.....At least it wasn't worse, but this teaches me to do things the first time.

Thanks guys!

Btw, I run NGK coppers

So it's been one week since a section of my fuel pump harness was replaced. I have not had any hesitation on load. I think this is definitely one thing that should be checked if you are experiencing that common symptom.

The harness leads to a plug to the fuel pump. The plug was melted on mine.
