Cruise Control

All right, my 93 SE cruise doesn't work. Unfortunately for me, that's kind of a big deal (a few 500 mile trips a year to visit the fam).

The toggle switch on the left lights up, the switch on the steering wheel works (I bought a working one on ebay and replaced it just to make sure).

Unfortunately, that's about all the info/knowledge I have. If it's not enough info to diagnose anything, just tell me (and I'll reluctantly take it to the shop). Or, is there a common problem that comes up with the cruise control that I can look into?

could be the sensor on the brake pedal...

Ok, there's no disguising my cluelessness any more. I had no idea there was a sensor on the brake pedal. Would that keep cruise from even engaging?

How do I look at/test this sensor?

The brake sensor turns off the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed. First try putting pressure under the pedal with your foot (holding it up). If it the cruise control works, then it's just a pedal adjustment issue. (Happened on my old Accord.)

I just took it for a spin-not the issue, but I appreciate the suggestion. It's still nice to eliminate possibilities.

On my GXE whenever the cruise engaged there was a noticeable click. There's just nothing when I press the buttons on this car. I guess that's typical if the cruise isn't working?

First a few basics. Is the fuse still good? Is the cable still attached to the Throttle body?

The cruise control module may be bad....

May also be the spiral thingy under the steering wheel...

But before blindly replacing parts,go through all the under hood wiring/under dash wiring for obvious signs of trouble..[i.e. broken/disconnected wire harnesses/etc..

It will be a few days until I can jump into this, but are there certain parts I need to be looking for? I can get in under there, but I won't be sure what I'm looking at, and what parts have to do with the cruise. Anybody have pictures of the different parts?

Mine did the same thing and I went to a junkyard and bought a new module and removed it all as one piece.

See the grey canister with the blue sticker on it? Take everything attached to that from a junkyard car and swap it. I think mine was like $10-$20 or something in that area. I also disconnected the battery and let it sit overnight, then reconnected it. I don't know if that was necessary, but I did it anyway.

Does anybody else ever get the flashing cruise light as well? From time to time mine will just flash at me as if to say, "no".

Ok, I had my dash apart last night to fix my locks. I snapped a couple pictures of what's under there. It looks like a total mess to me, so I don't know whether any of you can tell by looking at it if there are any problems that might be affecting my cruise control.

Also, I saw the part you mentioned on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...5983&rd=1&rd=1

Will a '90 part work for my '93 SE, and should I go ahead and just snag that for $19 w/ shipping?

I would think the throttle cable is different, since they are for a different engine. Not 100 percent sure of that, though.

as long as it fits it should be OK. because of the way that throttle cables hook in.

Cliff, before you replaced this part, was there some way you diagnosed that it was the problem? I'd hate to buy a used one and put it in only to find out it's something else.

I replaced mine with a JY cruise control module and it still doesnt work. All fuses and relays are good so im guessing i got a bad module..is there a way to test if the wiring is good?

Mine has flashed. It happens while I'm driving with cruise control and the speed sensor goes out. Even if the failure is brief, the cruise stops maintaining speed and the light starts flashing.

Thats funny, because usually things only fail when you are alone, and work very well when you try to demonstrate the problem.

My 95 is doing the exact sme thing as 15yrslater, I am currently diagnosing the problem. one thing that I have noticed about nissans (I have had several) is that the cruise light does not come on unluss it is fully functioning. For example when you are doing below 30 mph and you attempt to turn cruise on it will not click or anything. This is important only because it means that it may not be an electrical problem. I removed my vacuum pump and attached 12 volts directly to the unit and it did not produce enough power to pull the cable. I don't know however how much voltage output the control module puts out since it can't be tested sitting still. Does anyone know how to bypass the sensors to test the module and vacuum pump while not moving?

there are 4 sensors. bypass em all go like 40 mph and see if it engages. if so its a sensor.

I forgot to check this post again. I guess this is a late reply.

It was so inexpensive that I just figured I would try it out. I don't think there is much more that can go wrong -- the fuse, relay and the module. Oh, and the wires including the steering wheel. Am I missing anything else?

my cruise main switch always works but sometimes i can't get the car to actually activate cruise. i'm thinking my problem is in the steering wheel buttons though.

I know it's a cliche, but have you checked the fuse first?

who's this to? if it's to me, then no i haven't, but even so the cruise will work for a month, quit for three, work for a month randomly, quit again, etc etc. so the fuse must be good... unless it broke and resolders itself from time to time(?)

It's your steering wheel buttons, mine has done the exact same thing as yours, sometimes it just wont engage/then i smack the crap out of the buttons/works fine for a while..

I have noticed that they only do it in colder weather..

Come on you are kidding us. That looks like some NASA pictures of some of their space equipment.

Goes on and off, eh? Yeah, gotta love when that happens. My climate control screen does that too. But, nevermind, guess it's not the fuse then. It's just that nobody mentioned it on the thread before me.

I thought that I had problems with mine but ended up being that I was going to fast or too slow when I tried to engage it. Around a 100kph or 62 in the US is about right. If it doesn't work, I tried my end of it.
