okay while i am driving the line on my temperature guage goes up near the "hot" line, and when i turn the car off for a second it goes back to normal, but i notice that i smell the coolant. my water pump is new and some of the hoses are new, does any body no what the problem is? and how much it would cost?

 

I had the same problem recently and it turned out to be the thermostat. It is fairly easy to do it yourself and they usually run at about $20 (Pep Boys,Kragens) If you do it yourself dont forget to get some coolant.
