Pulling VG motor..

Hey guys, Im planning on pulling the motor on my VG to throw a low mileage one in there. My motors slipped timing and has 0 compression on all 6 cylinders.

To those that have done this before, did you drop the tranny first, then pull the motor from the top?? I pulled a motor on a supra not too long ago, but on that the engine+tranny had to come out together, since the tranny was bolted vertically..

I have an engine hoist (crane), but I dont know if the tranny+engine can easily come out the top without banging everywhere..Should I drop auto tranny, then pull motor out the top?
All advice appreciated..

Typically, the trans is disconnected/removed from the bottom/then the engine is removed from the top.

If you have jack stands that will go high enough you can drop both of them. I know with the 5-speed its a bit tight pulling both out from the top... not having the clutch lines though might make it a little easier as that was what I was caught on most of time.

I've done it both ways. (eek)

Dropping both down the bottom sounds easier but you have to lift the front 1/2 to heaven to clear at least the VE motor. Especially if you drop it on a rolling pallet so you can roll the engine out. I have pretty tall jack stands an I had to put big blocks under them to get enough clearance.

I usually just drop tranny from the bottom, put the wheels back on and lift the engine out of the top.

you can pull it from the top.
make sure you take out the tranny mount assembly and tilt the tranny down and then pull the motor up. hopefully there's enough ceiling clearance for you if you're indoors.

Note; most of the front suspension was already removed prior to the drop,so keep this in mind if you decide to go this route..

I think pulling them both together is the easiest. Why pul one out of the bottom and one out of the top when they can both come out as one piece?

It seems like horizontal space is the issue. I plan to pull mine soon (http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=524049) and have been mulling over this very issue. In my case it all depends on what repairs you plan, so if the tranny has to come off later anyway you might as well get it out first.

you CAN pull it out together from the top.
just need to remove all the tranny mount stuff and slightly tilt the engine/trans assembly down on the tranny side and there's enough room for it to come out.

i've done this a few times w/o any problems.

when you pull them both from the top, do you hook the engine hoist chain to the engine only? i.e. are the bolts holding the tranny to engine strong enough to fully support the weight of the trans? I would think they are..

Why wouldn't they be? 1/2 of the bolts would be enough. So yeah, you are good there.

Maybe the VG is diff. But it seemed like pulling both wth my VE was going to be tough w/o banging stuff around.

you kinda have to man handle it a little bit but it should be fine pulling the motor out. it's VERY tight but it's doable....even w/ the auto tranny.

I had no problem pulling mine together, and not having to jockey it around. remove the hood.
