If you want to retain the stock exhaust note, then i recommend recommend staying with the OEM muffler,i have heard the 5th gen oem muffler also has pretty much the same sound...
Someone in the classifieds has a good used 3rd gen muffler f/s..link to his for sale thread below

Greddy has a complete exhaust system from the y-pipe and has all the pipe and a muffler for $609, i dont know how much it is shipped, but here is a link.

but if you just want a replacement muffler, i have the one off of my 93. its in exellent condition. i dont have my camera right now, but when i get it ill take some pics of it and post them here. summit has a lot of inexpensive mufflers too, just go to the link below and narrow the search down to what kind of muffler you want, and there you go.

The warpspeed will increase power and mpg and everything will be new (flanges, gaskets, etc) so you won't worry about any more problems.
As for the original poster, you can either buy a GReddy (cat back only), a warpspeed (everything from the y-pipe back or just the cat back) or have something custom made at a shop near you. This can go from OEM all the way to mandrel bent, full on sweet exhaust.
I would recommend you buy an aftermarket y pipe (best inexpensive mod for performance on these cars) and then have a cat-back made at a shop with a resonator and quality muffler. Something like the 5th gen would be optimal. It is quiet, but changes the flow when you get into the high rpm range.
If you want to spend the money, the GReddy sounds awesome, IMO. I have one and I love it. I first heard it on MrGone's old car and I fell in love with the sound immediately. The downside is that the GReddy cat-back costs as much as the complete warpspeed exhaust (y-pipe, high flow cat, resonator and cat-back with a magnaflow muffler) combined.

flex pipe
i know the warp speed is the way to go but i dont have the time towait for one to show up plus i will in stall the flex pipe myself as i have all the tools and it what i use to do for a living i guess what i am looking for is an easy answer what size and how long. when the car is done doing my daliy driving then ill do all the mods.so puting in the flex is cheaper for me since im doing it myself since all it will cost is my time and the 20 or 30 bucks for the flex pipe.

Will pacesetters even fit with a WSP (or stock) y-pipe? I looked and the description is kind of vague. Some models have a completely different y-pipe and others will hook up to the stock one, but everywhere I look is really vague as far as which models get what.
Reason I ask is that my y-pipe finally came! I can't wait to get it installed

i have seen a off white Maxima running around these parts over here in Washington with a cheap looking ricer straight through mufflers. its kinda hard to do a dual exhaust without having to cut out the spare tire well to fit a nice set of mufflers underneath the car and not just some ricer cans.

WSP Y-pipe installed! I have to admit I was skeptical at first, but I felt a definite improvement in acceleration from it. Awesome first mod! My only beef is that I seem to have traded a rusted-out flex section for one that hisses, but only at low rpm. I figured the pipe would be louder, but I thought the lined flex section was supposed to stop it from hissing... Has anyone else noticed this?

Sounds like a leak to me. How is your low end after the y-pipe? I installed mine about a week ago and my bottom end seems weaker than before, MUCH weaker.

Have you checked for a bad knock sensor code?

But other than pacesetter the only other brand is Greddy(that I found) and that is out of my price range. Should I just get one custom made? Or does warpspeed also sell cat backs as well. Im a newb so if I got any of this stuff mixed up help me out. Thanks
2. no one beside pacesetter makes headers for the 3rd AFAIK
