Question - removing exhaust manifold studs
#1
I would like to do a preventive maintainance on my 1994 SE.
Since I do not know if the exhaust manifold studs on my car are original or not, I want to replace them. It is probably cheaper to replace it before it breaks than having to extract it when it breaks.
The question is that could I break these bolts when attemting to remove them?
If so, what is the best way to get them out and replace them?
Should I ask the car dealer to do this? Since it is not broken, is it cheaper to do at the dealer?
Thanks

this is one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type of things. unless you KNOW they're broken, just leave them alone. of course, that's given that you don't have any other problems that require you to be in the area.
you're talking about $600-1000 worth of work for a few studs that may or may not break, which aren't even serious if they do break. it's not like a timing belt or anything..
so just don't worry about them until they do break.
if they do, it'll cost a FEW more $ to have a broken one removed. it only took me about 5-10 min longer to remove a broken one than a non-broken one.

Question...
This is kinda dumb, but may I assume the high cost comes from the studs located on the rear side of the engine (that aren't in plain view)? Cause the front ones look like they could be replaced in 10 minutes.

yea before i got mine replaced i asked them if there was a way to check the bolts, they said that there was a chance they could break if they removed them from the engine, but they did finally break. like everyone said, its not worth it unless they need replaceing
