Running extremely rich(tooo much gas) is the chief cause of black exhaust smoke...

1. stuck open injectors will cause this..

2. Improperly installed o'rings in the injector rail will also cause this issue.

3. possibly a malfunctioning o2 sensor could cause this...(bad wiring also)

4. possibly a bad coolant temp sensor(long shot)(or bad wiring to the sensor)

5.

#1,2 or 5.
5 being ECU injector circuit fried and causing #1.
3 and 4 don't affect the system that much individually to cause obvious black smoke.

Yes,an extremely rich running engine is in effect "being choked" by too much fuel in the cylinders..

Yes, a bad injector must be replaced...It may be more than one injector though..

Have you or the previous owner replaced any injectors?

Yes it is possible to have an injector ohm out ok,but still malfunction..Not likely, but possible..

And yes,a crappy idle can be caused by bad injectors...

Question...

Did your car have this same issue before you replaced the knock sensor,or after?

I dunno dude,it sounds like maybe you have done something wrong during reinstallation of all related parts of the k/s job..

But it may also be just a fluke that an injector or two may have failed at the same you done your work...

You might want to remove the d side plastic fender well and check around in there for burnt wires..

Can you post the ebay link for the injectors(just to make sure you bought the correct injectors)
