umm, no...if you are wanting a color-keyed grille, go for a 92-94 unit...

I thought long and hard about changing mine and I hate bling-bling, but for some reason I like the way my car looks with a chrome grille...

i actually considered (for a matter of seconds) doing a proper chrome paint job on the gxe grille on the outer ring, like the one that's on there now. i don't know, there's something about the single fin design that kinda makes me consider 'pimpin' it.

it's hard to tell which one's the chrome grill in your night time pic...
but i prefer 92-94 grills (gxe or se) over the earlier model

i don't like the 92-94 grille unless it's debadged. the nissan logo just makes the front end of the car look like a sentra.. to the point where sometimes i'll see a 92-94 3rd gen oncoming and have to wonder if it's a max or a sentra.. which is pretty sad, considering i can tell a 3rd gen 10 seconds in front of me at night just by the shape of the glow of the taillights.

IMHO I don't like the 89-91 grille, I have replaced mine with a chrome 94 SE without logo and I will install this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/92-93...QQcmdZViewItem
When I receive it and install it I will upload pictures

I saw someone with a 89-91 gxe grill with the middle bar painted black. The outer piece and nissan logo chrome. I thought it looked pretty good. But I think the 92-94 is best with logo removed!

nice....i had the 92-94 debadged pretty much since i've had the car, and thought i was in need of a change, but after a day of the gxe(?) grille, i liked the other better.

thanks for the opinions guys

Use the grille you dont care about most and...doo some custom work!
gut it out... install some nice mesh, better yet keep the center bar in the grille and mesh behind that.

Keep the current grill. You're calling it an SE grill but it looks like it has chrome around the outside, which makes it identical to my 93 GXE grill.

Bru91, that's what i was kind of thinking of doing to that split grille if i kept it....chroming the outside and meshing the top and bottom sections.

93SCMax, i have no idea what the grille is for lol, never have....bought it off ebay a long time ago, and nobody has ever seemed to know so i just let it be ;x

the three-bar grills is from a GXE of the 89-91 vintage. Design changed in 1992-1994. All GXE had chrome, all Se wwas body-color. Both grilles in your original pic are GXE grilles, since both are chrome. Think of it as 3rd gen (89-91) and 3½rd gen (92-94) maxima...

Yeah I really like the 92-94 Grille better. I have a GXE one and need to get rid of it.

i still don't get how come everyone seems to automatically call a 89-91 grille a "GXE" grille, as though SE models didn't exist until the VE, and that all VE-era 3rd gens are SEs, because well, GXE existed in 92-94 also, and ran a VG...

there's 2 types of GXE grilles, one with a chrome rim and one chrome bar in the middle and the logo down to the LH side, another with the chrome rim and many bars in the middle with a central Nissan burgerlogo.

same with SE, but switch 'chrome' for 'color keyed'

caped: only reason i thought different is because my grille (the chrome one) was advertised differently, and no one else has ever corrected me, so i knew no different.....i also didn't take into consideration the difference in 89-91 and 92 - 94 se and gxe options and styling.

I know a little more about all that stuff now, as i didn't before.

i thought the replaced tails on the car were older gxe tails, but now i know they're not ,as we ll as the grill question......

thanks for your help in making the difference more known.
