Pressure depends on the tires you have, how you drive and what kind of a ride you want.
Most tires are either 36 psi or 44 psi maximum pressure, checked cold. The tire's weight carrying capability is acheived when the tire is inflated to its maximum.
The roughness or smoothness of the ride is controlled a little bit by the tire pressure. The lower the pressure, the softer the ride.
For the best tire wear, the front tires should have more air pressure then the rear tires because a front wheel drive car has more weight on the front tires.

Me personally, I use stock size tires. I run my front tires 6 pounds higher than the rears. My current tires are 44 psi max rated, so I run 38 in the fronts and 32 in the rear. At highter pressure, I don't like the feel when I hit a pot hole or am on rough pavement.
If you have low profile tires and don't have smooth streets, I would suggest running with the pressure on the high side to avoid flat tires from hitting pot holes.

i like that because your headline thing seems to speak to him. no offense to him.

i keep mine at like 35 or so. one leaks slowly. it has a plug in it. and um... for whatever reason i ended up with front tires who say that the max pressure is 35 so i really can't go higher.

they won't last longer, but you will notice the center wearing out faster due to overinflation.
