CV Axle Problems

My drivers side CV axle keeps popping out. It seems to pop out only on hard left turns. My only idea is that it could be the steering limiter. Any one know how to adjust these? Or have any ideas what else it could be?

Wait a minute.... your a " Automotive Engineer, ASE Certified. NAGC Certified."

And your asking us? It's been some time since I looked at it, but take off your wheel and on the hub there will be a bolt with a plastic cover. When you turn hard it the head of the bolt will hit the control arm. Just losen to limit your steering more.

you sure your subframe is still solid?
my buddy went through several axles before he figured out the subframe had cracked and was eating up the axles

A severly worn d-side front control arm bushing could cause the axle to pop out.

Are you sure the snap ring is seated in the differential? On the drivers side the axle is held in by a snap ring and it's somewhat difficult to "Lock" into the differential. If the axle just slides out, then the ring wasn't properly seated or someone took it off or broke it.

Firstly assuming you mean the CV axle from the CV outer joint.

The most likely reason is the ring on CV shaft has been broken or sheared. I sheared one very recently when changing a CV but it could happen in service if the item when changed was unduely expanded or distorted during installation. (It is easy to do when fustrated or drinking beer... LOL).

The CV ring is high tension steel about 3mm Diameter loop with opening about of about 3mm. It should be located on the CV shaft then slide into CV outer. When inserted correctly you will be unable to remove the CV shaft easily from the CV outer.

If it has fallen off or sheared

You will need to find it and all the pieces or face the possibilty of fragments destroying your outer cv joint at a later date when it gets caught in a ball bearing and chewed up.

You may get lucky and find the pieces of it still stuck in the groove. The ring normally located about 35mm (approx off mem) from the end of the CV axle stub. The rest of the ring if not found should be located on the inside CV assembly. Good Luck finding it.

A replacement ring can be found at any CV specialist and should cost few dollars. Alternative is to buy new CV outer and install it. These can be found on E-bay.

If you mean the Nut holding the CV into the wheel axle the torque needed is 235 Nm to 314 Nm or (174 ft lb to 231 ft lb).

Are you sure the snap ring is seated in the differential? On the drivers side the axle is held in by a snap ring and it's somewhat difficult to "Lock" into the differential. If the axle just slides out, then the ring wasn't properly seated or someone took it off or broke it.
This ring is the same on the Inner CV and 92 MAX is right in what he said however you will need to estblish what happened to the ring. You dont want it floating in your transmission. I do disagree with it being harder then the outer CV... it's easier to put in and take out then the outer CV shaft side

Hope this all helps, let us know whatever the result in any case !!

The CV Axles are fine and so are is the lock ring. The only thing I need to know is what to adjust the steering limiters too.

I've replaced dozens of axles on several makes/models of cars(3 of them on my maxima,1 on my wifes maxima),and have never had one to fall out after replacement(Did you recently replace the axle?)

Have you (previous to the axle falling out) adjusted the steering limiters from their original setting? If they havent been touched, then your should look for the real issue that has caused the axle to fall out,not using the steering stoppers as a bandaid fix..

How did you conclude the axle/lock ring are not the problem?

Are you sure the axle nut is tight?

Condition of front control arm bushings?

Gusset bolts tight?

Do you have lowering springs, with oem struts?

No wonder the workshop manual is hard to read on this subject.

I think the answer from the manual is this:-

Front Wheel turning angle:-
Inside 35 Deg to 39 Deg
Outside 28 Deg to 32 Deg

Hope this helps!!
