I think I might have fixed mine today for one cent. Of course I won't know until I drive it a few days and see if it shows up again.

Well, it's most likely in one of the shoulder belt mechanisms. There are two switches in each assembly. One is for the travel, if the belt hasn't rolled back and locked, the light will come on. The other switch is to actually make sure the shoulder belt is locked in. This seems to be the problem one. I think it senses the belt locked in with some sort of a magnet or some other device, and this is what is causing problems. So I wired up this sensor so it always thinks the belt is locked in. Very easy to do!

First you must diagnose which side is giving your problems. When the chime goes off, wiggle the shoulder belt latch assembly. If it goes off after a bit, you found your side. Now, take off the plastic panel inbetween the doors. You'll see a small white harness with 4 wires mounted to the metal about 2/3 way up. My culprit was the passenger side, so I jumped two of the wires with a 3" piece of speaker wire (temporarily). On the passenger side, the two wires you want to jump are the rearmost two wires on the harness. They are purple/yellow and black. All I did was stick the speaker wire into two of the terminals to 'connect' the wires all the time.

IT seems to have worked so far, but I'll have to wait a few days to make sure. If it does work I'll post more detailed instructions and pics (or drawings).

Same problem

SOOOOO annoying, especially if you are driving with people
they think something is wrong with your car, but its just the seat belt sensor. How did the person fix it for 1 cent, a penny i'm guessing, does the belt still work?

well, if that white harness is for the seatbelts, then instead of connecting those wires, why not just unplug that harness?

Funky Seatbelt Light
Ok I usually dont post much on here but I know how annoying this chime is. I have been dealing with this issue for over a year. Well yesterday I had taken my car to the dealer to get my Y-Pipe replaced and when I was there had told them about my issue and asked them to look at it. They found out what the issue was they said it was the seat belt rail assembly which is almost the whole seat belt assembly. They had to special order it and they said when they get it in they will let me know and yes it was under full warranty. They also tried telling me when i asked them to look at it that noone had ever brought a complaint about this issue through the dealership. I then mentioned to the service guy that i can tell him where to look online that people were complaining about it and he asked me if it was maxima.org so he knew of the board i asked him to look in 3rdgens and he would see it. In regards to someone's post stating to just unplug the harness underneath the seats I am sorry to say that it doesnt work due to the fact that one weekend I had taken out my interior to clean the car and install neons when I put the car back together I forgot to reconnect the harness and I was still getting the seat belt light and chime. Just figured I would help everyone out since I have gotten a lot of help from the Board in the past.

Yes it did! And the light does stay out even if you unbuckle the shoulder belt. So just make sure your passenger is wearing their belt

**** is annoying!! I took it to my dealer and they told me that it is not under the seatbelt warranty. They told me that only the belt itself is under warranty. Is that right?? Shouldnt it be the whole seat belt system? If the sensors are acting up then what esle could be wrong with it, ya know? I want to fix it, but how is the easiest and most effective way to do it?

it's seat belt and related components that's under the lifetime warranty. the seat belt rail is a related component.

Does anyone know where this may be listed so I can show my dealership? That pestering chime is bugging me. If I can bring it to the dealer and have them fix it for free then why spend the time myself taking things apart? Unfortunately, I dont have any warranty papers or documentation for my car that states this.

Stealership up in Bellingham gave me the same line, "unless it's mechanically not working, its not covered by the warranty".

Now I've just got to figure out how to fix this on my own...

It's true, by jumping the wires, it makes the seatbelt warning think that it's ALWAYS locked into place. I've never actually heard of any mechanical problems with these seatbelts though. You can try to get it replace by the dealer, but if they don't wanna do it, just jump it. They must replace the entire unit.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Was able to figure out how to put the seat belt back together. On my Maxima the wire colors were different and in a different order on the connector. On the driver side, the switch has two black wires and when to the front pair of the connector. The switch for the shoulder unhook was above the position locator switch. So it's better to go by the switch than wire color or connector location.

Though of replacing the magnetic switch, but the local Nissan said that the parts are no longer available. I don't know how they will fix a broken seat belt.

For my other car 2003 Toyota said my seat belt replacement (jammed) was 2 months within the garantee period (done summer 2007). So are new cars without the lifetime on safety equipment?
