I am looking at 3rd gen Max's with 5 speeds and I was wondering if any of you can tell me what problems I should look for and if any years were good or bad?

Car will be daily driver and weekend auto cross

Thanks in advance

Transmissions, exhaust manifold studs, injectors. You may never have to work on any of these but they are fairly commonly reported. Change all!! the fluids asap. Good Luck...these cars are well built!!

If the maxima has a bose system, check the speakers and amps, also the antena. The locking ignition is a b*tch on some maximas too. Thats the main things that went wrong with my max.I don't know if those affected anybody else but it does not hurt to check.

The only problem I've had was with the door locks not working...otherwise it's been trouble free for the 3 years that I've had mine.

My 3 year experience:
PROBLEM SOLUTION
1. Rattling sunroof Don't know
2. Leaky water pump Try lubricating coolant
additive
3. Rusty fuel filling tube
under the plastic cover Use anti-rust
4. Rattle in steering column Repair
5. Slow power windows in winter Use silicon spray

In general, 3rd Gen. Max is a best choice. Wonderful reliability and power. Please note - avoid VE30DE engine, choose VG30E one. Good luck !

What's wrong with the VE30DE? Is VG30E better? And why?

VE30DE vs VG30E

I've read A LOT of claims regarding problems with VTC and big bucks for it's repair. At the same time VGE accelerates Max like a jet without those additional 30 hp.
Hope your VE is well.

i have had no vtc problems or stud problems. my family has had the car since 93. i doubt that there was any problems with the vtc's or stud problems in the year we didnt own it. so not all ve's have those problems.

Re: VE30DE vs VG30E

Alot of those claims are probably from me since I'm one of the few who have replaced my VTC and studs as a diy project 2 years ago. Vg max have grunt down low, ve has decent grunt down low but has breathing and revs up high ie.. 6,800 rpm.

The fuel filling tube rust problem was "fixed" by a recall not too long ago. Contact your local dealer for info on it.
