jc whitney has 02 sensors for cheap. i dont know how to tell what kind i need though. is the max 02 sensor 1-wire or 3-wire? the sensors are supposed to be universal but i wanted to make sure i could use theirs. the 1-wire is $30 and the 3-wire is $50. anybody know how to tell if i can use these or not?

Where can i find the O2 sensor on the car?
And is there a way to tell if its bad by looking at it?
I started to get horrible milage about a month ago, like 16 mpg on 60% highway driving... I don't want to replace the O2 sensor if its still good. Where can I find it on the car?

Spend the extra money and buy an OEM replacement.. Go to Nissan or carparts.com and get either OEM or a Bosch sensor from carparts.com..
they're about $114 from carparts last time I checked, but you can get lotsa discounts on their site.
when it comes to parts like that, don't waste your time with non-oem parts. the only reason I even suggest getting a bosch from carparts.com is that Nissan OEM sensors are made by Bosch with simply a different nameplate stamped on them.
As for the location to check it, it's on the exhaust pipe just by the cat.. crawl under the car and you'll see it. you'll need a 17mm (I think) wrench to pull it.
there's no way to visually see if it's bad.. if your car has over 90k mi on it, it's time to replace the sensor..
sometimes they can be fouled by high emissions causing carbon buildup on it, but that's usually not the case in our cars.. these sensors only last so long, then they die..
one of the big symptoms of a bda sensor is poor gas mileage, so if you're only getting 16mpg, it's probably a good time eto change the sensor.

You could use the 3 wire O2 sensor. The only problem is that for the sensors they sell you would have to splice them into your existing harness. If I were you I would look around at auto parts stores. I found a replacement for mine for like $60. I was going to get one from JC Whitney too, but I needed one right away. If you get one from an auto shop make sure its not the universal though. Those you have to splice too.

MY $0.02 on O2 sensors>>>
If you have over 80-90K and had the car for a least 1-2yrs I think it's about time to change the sensor. O2 sensor should be the most bang for the buck mod you can do because you have to have your fuel curve flowing correctly from the ECU. Once you take care of the basic fuel and ignition circuits, then you'll have all the benefits of all future mods, later.

Some sensors are heated, some aren't. 3rd gens don't use the heated type.
there are also 1-wire sensors. don't ask me how they work, but my GF's previous car (chevy cavalier) and my old mitsu truck had one.

I say get the O2 sensor from JCwhitney and save $50. I never buy any parts from dealers unless its the last resort. They are a rip off.

Oh yeah.. I do seem to remember seeing a part listing for a "heated" O2 sensor on Maximas also...
but I dunno.. seems to be very uncommon.. maybe Kaleb could hook us up with the info on these differences.. I'll cal him since he's at work.

5-wire O2 Sensor again
Hi guys,
I have to tell you that my 92 Max have 5-wire O2 sensor. I've seen it many times with my own eyes. The wires divided to two different cables and run through two connectors - 3-pin and 2-pin.
Note: my Max is European one.
Regards,
DDD

I just replaced my O2 Sensor. It is a heated O2 sensor. It is a 3 wire device. I would buy OEM. I had a difficult time getting my old one off - not at the sensor but at the connector. It had accumulated dirt and small stones. I had to cut part of it to get is off. I would have been in deep weeds had I counted on having that part of the harness to "splice" a new sensor to. Again, I'd go OEM. Mine was about $114.
