Locking and unlocking calipers?

On the disk brakes can the calipers lock and unlock by themselves? At first the dealer said that someone was riding the brake, then they said that it was a long term caliper sticking and unsticking. Both the right and left side are worn exactly the same amount. Was the shippers riding my brake for 30 miles? Why were they even driving it?

On mech. said that calibers don't stick and unstick. They either get locked and stay locked until physcially released or stay stuck. Which is right?

usually when the calipers lock up, they'll stay locked, and have to be taken apart by force. (i.e. a hammer and screwdriver or chisel)
Often, this means the caliper needs rebuilt.


As far as your problem, if the pads are just severely worn, but worn evenly- I would think it's just your driving style.. if you drive hard and stand onthe brakes at every light, then it's highly possible that you've gone through that much pad quickly.
Typically brake pads only last about 12-15k miles on my car because I drive so hard.

The pads have about 70% of REMAINING, only 30% used, so it looks like the pads would have gone 50K miles except if got overheaded and glazed over. Usually there easy braking, but with highway traffic flowing at 85 mph at times, it's easy to do a hard brake. The calipers don't seem to be binding at all (at least at the moment).

Are you pad worn out (indicators sratching) or are the pads glazed over? The only other thing I can think of is that some very thin oil was evenly splashed or sprayed onto the brakes (like a little bit of oil in lots of water).
