Hello all,
I have a '90 maxima. Recently I in did a major tune-up and when I change a transmission oil, the quantity does not match with what say in the service manual(9qt) and what I can add to it. Here is what I did:

1. I drant all the Auto-Transmission flued(ATF).
2. The service manual said the quantity should be about 9qt, but I add 6 qt and go for a short drive. Come back and start checking with the dip-stick. The mark on the stick is about half way of the whole stick(i check and recheck 10X), whoop. I then dran it out most of it - about 5qt. Now the dip stick indicate about just below the "cold" mark. I let it idle and check/recheck and add about 1 more quart until I pass the "hot" mark. I check/recheck 10X more time.

So according to that I only have about 2qt of ATF in my engine.

Please explain.

Thanks,
Thanh Truong

Without special machinery that your local mechanic would use you cannot drain all of the ATF out of your transmission. I believe somewhere around 2-3 quarts is left in the transmission.

its ok to drain and fill in normal mileage incriments I drain and fill my transmission every 15k miles but yes there is a special machine to flush the entire transmission but if you just drain and fill the trans more periodically you are fine also. i use somewhere between like 4-5qts when i refill oh and also check fluid level when car is running at idle its very important and when you first add fluid make sure it is full on the cold gauge on the dipstick and not hot, as transmission fluid expands as it heats up.

Same here...

I drained and refilled my 92SE A/T a month ago. Last time, I count 5.5 qts. So this time, I went and bought 6 qts and did it in the same manner except I wasn't watching the fluid went out. I left it long enough to drain and then refilled it - then I found out I still had not enough fluid after putting 6 qts in. Ended up getting an extra qt to bring it up to the cold full mark. I realised if I wait long enough, more fluid will come out. The total capacity (from the chilton manual) is 10 qts so I was able to change out 70% of the fluid.

Question

What do you do with the old fluid? Can it be mixed w/ used motor oil and brought to a recycling center? Or does it need to stay seperated? I have a jug I use to store used oil, but don't have another capable of handling 6-8 qts.
