What is gear Hunting in an Automatic???

Does anyone know what gear hunting is in an Auto? I have heard a few times mentioned here and wondering what it is. I think I have an idea but would still like to know.

I'm pretty sure it refers to when the auto tranny is switching back and forth between gears (4th and O/D for example) and "hunts" for the right gear
I think that's what it means, but I could be way off
