Greetings,

I made a deal to purchase some BOSE rear speakers for
my sister's 94 GXE from a member of the forum and what
I recieved were some plain-looking, non-amped speakers.
Both the BOSE system in my '93 GXE and the one in my
sister's '94 GXE have amps built onto the rear speakers,
but these speakers do not have amps.

Now, was I wrong to expect that these speakers should
have included amps since they were described to me as
being the rear speakers for a BOSE system or did some
BOSE systems have rear speakers that were not amplified?
He said these would cost me "$900" from the Nissan dealer
(knew this was doubtful) and so figured these would be
the correct amped speakers I needed. I was assured these
would work with my sister's '94 GXE BOSE system, but I
don't think they would.

One speaker was severely damaged in transit because the
fellow did not heed my request that they be packaged so as
not to be damaged in transit (I told him I did not care how
he sent them so long as they were packaged well and arrived
undamaged). So, in a way, my question is somewhat moot
since I have sent the speakers back to him already, but I
am still curious as to whether there are non-amped speakers
for some BOSE systems. My understanding was that the head
unit provides no amplification and that is handled at each
speaker by their own attached amp. These speakers did not
appear to ever have had an amp attached to them, nor did
they say "BOSE" anywhere on them.

First of all, if he said they are Bose, but the speakers do not have Bose written anywhere, then those are NOT Bose speakers. Second, he probably didn't include the amps if they were supposed to be Bose speakers. I don't know if the non-Bose system had separate amps, but it would seem like they should. Regardless, you need to email or contact him and straighten things out, especially if he sent you the wrong things or damaged goods. Good luck.

In the rear, the speaker is not enclosed with the amp as it is in the front. The amp is a separate circuit board that is enclosed in a plastic cover that sits next to the speaker. He should have sent that as well if he was providing you with what the dealership sells for $900.

$900 is a correct dealer price. It will vary. I have seen $750. But you can get them rebuilt much cheaper. $100 for amps (with exchange) $40 for the speaker (with exchange).

As far as if it is really bose, check the bottom of the magnet part. (the gold part), it should have the BOSE logo stamped on it.

The Bose speakers (front and rears) have amps attached to the speaker frame. The amp is not removable without unsoldering it from the speaker terminals.

On some years (including 1993), there is a connector between the rear speakers and amps. Takes a minute or two to remove the amp.

I need to open the trunk and take a look at them, but
I just expected that what I bought to have amps attached
to them because that's they way I've always seen them.
The connector that he included had what looked like the
connection for the amp, but no amp was present.

I have not heard from the fellow I made the deal with, but
I'm hoping he makes good on the deal and returns my money.
The lack of an amp with them was not as big a problem as
the fact he packed them poorly and one was destroyed in
shipping. If they had arrived intact, but without the amps,
I'd probably still look into returning them to him because
these weren't really what I was looking for (thought they
were from what he said they cost from a dealer), don't think
they will do my sister much good without the amps.
