I ordered new purple bulbs from autodynamic, and I got them the other day. I have taken some pics of them, and here they are. They are actually much darker, much like the VW lights in Jetta and the Beetle, only without the red needles. They aren't too good at night, but soon I'll be getting my Superwhite PIAA's for my dash.

Tell me what you think?
Also I got my .Org stickers in the mail. They look great, Thanks Jambo. I put them on the rear windows on the back doors near the front. I'll would have taken some pics but my digi cam batts ran down. I work at Best Buy, I'll pick up some tomorrow. Hey, if any org member in the club shop at the Best Buy in Laurel, MD stop by the computer dept. and holla at me. Just ask for Brandon. You guys know my by MadMax1991

Looks great man!!!

I love the way it looks, definently reminds me of the new VWs! I've got my blue 194s sitting on my bookcase but have had no time to pull the cluster....one day I'll get my lazy *** up and put 'em in!

Throw those 194's out and put in 168's. That's what I had in at first and that's what I have in now. I also took out those purple corner 1157's and put in the superwhites and in the corners and the markers. They are all one color now. It looks nice, not too blue, not too white. I also changed that green light over the stereo, actually I put a blue cap over the bulb. Hey I also made it to 200,000 miles on Maxine, and she is still running strong. I guess I need to go to bed, I got to be to work at 10am.

My white 168's

I didn't use caps, I used 168 purple blubs in my dash. The bulbs were actually purple. The color is actually darker than the pics showed. For anyone changing their dash lights, DO NOT PUT IN 194's. THEY ARE TOO DIM. Take my recomendation and use 168's. The 3rd gens uses 4 bulbs to light the guages. I got my bulbs from www.Autodynamic.com How do you change the bulbs in the shifter?

I have been useing 168's for a few months with no problems. I'm looking in to putting 18w 168's in my dash for true brightness. The downside about the white dash in the 3rd gens is that they don't allow alot of light through them. Which is bad on our eyes. But I was using 5watt 168's, the standard 194 is 3.5 watts, which isn't much when compared with the 5watt 168.

im not thebull, but you can change the
shifter light easy. just lift up piece around the shifter
console, reach underneath and feel around for the bulb
connector. twist and pull out, then replace. it's a 194.
thats the only bulb ive changed in my interior

yeah i used the 194 and they are way too dim. like he said the post before, to change the shifter light, just pull the plastic cover off. then unscrew the 4 screws holding the plastic piece around the shifter on. there is a big red wire that has the bulb on it. twist it and it pops out. sorry it took long to respond. i havnt been on.

Well guys I did it again. I installed new dash lights. I ordered 2 set of 168 Xtreme white PIAA's, the color temp ratings on these lights are 4150°K. I got them from www.autobulbdepot.com. These lights are superwhite and they are bright as hell. I'm telling you for a fact that these bulbd will brighten up any 3rg gen dash. They have yet to go dim on me. I paid $12.50 per pack of two bulbs, only 2 sets were needed. I'm telling everyone that they need to get these lights. I have not noticed any extra heat problems with them. They also have a very bright blue hue to them. PICS TO COME SOON, I still haven't got the batteries for the digi cam. The SE max's will notice much better visibility of the guage readings.

Does the button that dims the instrument still work with your new bulbs. Anyways, lights look real good.

Thanks. Yes the dimmer switch still controls the lights. Since the fourm as been down, I've since put in new brighter PIAA's. Those are very bright. They remind me of the dash lights that are in the S-class benze and the Infiniti's. I'll post some pics tonight.

The actual color of the PIAA's are superwhite blue. they are nicer looking in person. Plus they don't dim as bad the other bulbs. And they are easier on the eyes.

The headlights are pain white bulbs. I'm going to upgrade my harness to the heavy duty harness and get me some PIAA's up front

Go with the PIAA's 4150K bright's, colors dim overtime, and that might make it harder for you to see your dash. That's why I took out my purple bulbs and put in the PIAA's. I'm not too sure on the actual wattege on the bulbs, but I've had them in for two weeks now, and I haven't see a problem arise yet. But try, different colors to see what you like.

Here is what my gauges look like with Eurolite Superwhite 194s.. Do you think I should get the 168s instead? I always thought the 194's were brighter

I've always been opposed to running higher than stock wattage anywhere...you may not melt anything now, just as you wont melt your headlight harnesses right away, but eventually, you will. And you'll hate yourself.

Hey, I'm IN on the bright blues behind the guages. I was under the impression that those were not 194's back there. If we can replace those, that's awesome. Anyone have a write up on how to get to the lights back there?

Thx,
Matt

To get the top dash panel off, you need to remove the entire dash trim. Do these steps:

1) remove the panel around the shifter. (this just pops up when you pull it from the bottom.

2) remove the trim around your radio/climate control. You need to remove the two screws on the bottom under your ash tray and cig lighter. The top of this panel just pops out when you pull. (Be sure to pull everything evenly.) This piece wont come completely off until you disconnect your hazard switch and cig lighter.

3) remove the panel with your dimmer/cruise/mirror controls by removing the four screws underneath it.

After you have removed these, you will find a number of screws along the bottom of the top panel. Remove these (4 or 6 i think...) then remove the 4 screws that you saw facing upward. Now, you will need to disconnect your clock. If you want to take it out, it is held in with 3 screws. You first also need to be careful when taking the top panel out of the dash. Make sure your steering wheel is completely down because you will need to bend the bottom of the panel slightly to take it out (be careful).

For those of you that are replacing the bulbs in the guages, there are 4 more screws holding the instrument cluster in place. I didnt disconnect anything when I replaced the bulbs because it was easy to work with.

You folks may want to keep a damp rag or a dirt devil nearby to clean out all the dust you are going to find in there! Good luck.
I found that in an earlier post...hope it helps.

regarding dash bulb replacement

if you've got a GXE /w green lights, don't even bother. it is the gauges themselves that make the light green.

Re: regarding dash bulb replacement

So... So, I can't change the color of the GXE dash by just using bulbs? Sux. Is the SE the only one that is able to change? What about putting brighter lights in? Help any?

I'm looking for a poorman mod to make my dash look better!
