need help with idle, please

I recently put in new plugs (NGK, stock ones) on my VG30E and I think/feel that the idle is not the same. is it often the case that you have to adjust the idle after replacing the plugs? with the shift in Parking it's about 1000 rpm, is it good? and I think the idle is not normal (consistent). any body have any suggestions where I may look into? I've been reading the book but haven't found anything. thanks for your help

Gapped properly? Run an ohm test through the plug wires (one at a time). I think the limit is 30,000 ohms to be good. Take off distributor to see if that's okay. Check make sure plug wires are attached good. Is it missing or just idling higher/lower?

Thanks for your reply, Chris. Yes, plugs are gapped properly. Before you even suggested, I measured the resistance of the ignition wires and they each were well below the limit. But the thing is that the nuts are rusted therefore I couldn't open the distributor to take the measurement from the inside of the distributor as the Chilton repair manual recommends. Does it matter much? speaking of distributor, how do you know when to replace it? I just don't have a record of when the last time ignition wires and distributor all together were replaced. By the way the car got 93,000 miles on it and the wires seem like the stock ones (with the word "yazaki")

It's not missing. It's just that when I don't step on the gas the idle is just above 1000rmp, ~ 1300rmp. May be if someone could direct me on how to adjust the idle properly.

Thanks again for any help

My cars idles at 600 rpms when I am, in gear, not going anywhere. I think this is too low. I am going to fool around with my throttle linkage cable today to see if I can solve some of my problems. Just an idea.

My throttle linkage cable was a little loose. So, I put some tension on the cable at idle and now my idle speed while in gear is 750-800. I think this is where it's suppose to be.

I looked it up in my Chilton's manual. There are two nuts on each side of a cable harness. Loosen one nut and then tighten the other nut. This will move that cable harness thingy further down the cable, therefore, it will tighten or loosen the cable. Check out a repair manual.

You are not supposed to adjust the idle by adjusting the throttle cable slack so it's holding the throttle open!!! This is a good way to get the throttle stuck open and get into an accident. The throttle cable should be adjusted so that the throttle plate sits against its rest with a little play in the cable for safety.
To properly adjust the idle the throttle body and IAC have to be clean, then the adjusting screw on the IAC is adjusted so the car idles at the right speed (which is on a sticker under the hood).
You kids are going to kill youselves.

<---Thinks tha 600 rpm..is a good idle

My Mamima idles around 750 or so. but when out of park and into a gear it goes to 600rpm... besides.. what is defined as a good idle... I feel comfortaable with a lower rpm...but 1000 rpm and above I would worry...

Re: <---Thinks tha 600 rpm..is a good idle

750 rpms while in neutral is normal.

And I am only suggesting that you should adjust your throttle linkage cable only if there is slack. If the cable is not loose, then you should not mess with it.
