Tornado Booster

Fact or Fiction?

Has anyone out there tried this thing? I saw it in the JCWhitney online catalog. It's supposed to fit between the TB and the inlet hose, and it runs under $70. It claims to improve fuel efficiency (up to 24%) and horsepower(+10hp). You just have to find the right sized one to fit between your inlet hose and TB.

Has anybody ventured to try one of these things out on a 3rd Gen, and if so, would you recommend it, or are you keeping this one a secret from us. Please let us know! It does sound tempting!!!

I've heard that it's B.S. and I've heard that it's all true. The concept seems to be reasonable...but that doesnt always mean it will actually work. I dont think anyone has actually tried it on a 3rd gen. Why dont you buy it and let us all know?

BS!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe its me. but I don't see how a "non-propelledd/powered" spinning fan gives you 10hp???

It makes sense to me. One way to get things moving faster is to get them spinning like a tornado...ie thats how toliets can move so much...stuff.

My $0.02

As an engineer who has completed fluid mechanics, I have this to say about the tornado booster: it acts as a static mixer to turn the air flow pattern from laminar to turbulent. By creating turbulent flow just before the air enters the combustion chamber, they CLAIM the air and fuel mix better, and thus react more efficiently, thus providing more power and less unburned fuel. In theory, this makes sense -- turbulent flow is necesary for proper mixing, and proper mixing allows more molecular collisions per unit volume, which means more reaction. However, if this translates to a 10 HP gain is another thing completely.

I say someone with some extra money try it, and then let us all know so we won't have to spend the money!!! While you're at it, why not put twin-turbo stickers on the fenders to give it an added boost! What could it hurt..... um, other than your wallet?

gains

Yeah 10 horses seems a bit much, and 24% increase in fuel economy is also probably the high end of the spectrum, but I dont think its unreasonable for this thing to work.

Maybe 5 horses plus better fuel economy is worth the $70 to me.

I dunno, I think I am getting one and then I can do a follow up report or something.

Its actually true, but as to how much horsepower it will give, I don't know, but there is a noticeable increase in power. I have one on a VG engine and Iam satisfied so far. Anything is better than nothing. I need all the help I can get with this VG engine.

Re: My $0.02

It "might" be turbulant right after it passes the thing, but remember is it still turbulant after it goes though the maf, tb, entire intake manifold, down the head, past the valves and finally into the combustion chamber? I really doubt that.

I placed the twister right at the end of the intake tube as it goes into the manifold. Currently I have a JWT popcharger, NGK wires, Bosch platinum plugs, Advanced timing, no cat, UR undercrank pulley, and a 3A racing muffler. Right now I have a manifold leak so Iam thinking hard about just ordering a y-pipe, anyone have any ideas of the gains from a y-pipe on the VG engine?

I am actually with the school of thought that it's a waste of $$$. I saw a thread in the 5th gen Forum and they were literally blasting the thing because it actually robbed them of HP.

a Y-pipe will be your best mod yet. our Y-pipes are pretty restrictive and a perfomance one will yield you some nice gains...

I definitly wouldnt put something in my intake that could restrict the flow.

WOW!!!

It seems we have more NAYSAYERS than YAYSAYERS on this thread so far, but since hova90se has one installed already, I muss ask your firsthand experience with this item.

hova90se, as I said when I started this thread, I have a 89SE, which, of course, has the VG engine. Which sized booster did you buy, and was it hard to install? If you have any, could you post a picture of it installed on your ride?

Iam trying to get some pics of my ride up now, especially after lowering it and putting on the stillenbody kit. When you order it they will ask you what type of automobile you have and they will send the proper diameter. Its not hard at all, you just put it at either end of the intake tube, but you have to avoid putting it at the bends.
