Fading Doors

We've got a silver max and the paint on the thing that sticks out on your door(I dont' know the correct name, it guards your door from other people hitting it with theirs) is totaly faded off into a cream color. It looks pretty bad. Anyone else have this problem. How much would it be to repaint?

Yes, they are called side moldings. A couple years back I decided to take mine off and repaint them because they were fading so bad....well, I liked the way they looked without them sooo much better that I just left them off. A couple other people have done the same, I know Chris has....

well, you can take them off but to make them shine (and keep them shining, all you need is some Armor-all it really works, mine have the same prob, now i just put some on every 3 weeks or so.

Umm.....how the crap is armor-all supposed to bring back the color/shine on the door moldings? I think you're getting the door moldings and the window moldings mixed up. Cuz I guarantee you that smearing armor-all across some fading paint isnt going to do anything....

If I took them off and got them repainted, then would they match up with the stock paint very good, or would they stand out because of the newer paint?

I guess it would be a waste of time to repaint it then. The car has got 160000 miles on it so I'm not looking to mod heavily or at all. It's just annoying.

Armor-all sux. If you use it on the outside of your car (like on the black trim around your windows etc) it will just wear off in about 0.3 seconds and then make your rubber crack. If you use it on your interior, then you're left with a white film after a few months.

Meguiars makes some pretty good stuff for both jobs. Also, for a poor man shine on the outside (black trim around stuff) use vasalene (especially on the rubber that lines the door...when the door is open you can lube it up good.

I'm no expert, but I try not to use anything on my car that's not meguiars any more. their stuff rocks.

heh...i did it the hard way. i used a razorblade and WD40 but invested a TON of time to not f up the paint...which i did a lil bit anyway...

patrick used something he got from Pep-boys that had citrus in it. he said it worked like a charm. i think it may have been goo-gone or something like that. check those out to see if they have the citrus in them...

the armor all shines up the moldings on the sides of your door because they are plastic, not metal. and yes, i do know what moldings you are talking about. if you haven't removed yours yet, try it because i guarantee it will work. i wish i knew that before i removed mine.

now, about the citrus cleaner. it is called goo-gone and you can pick it at a car parts store, or i got mine at wal-mart in the cleaning section. if you decide to do this, plan on spending a few hours scrubbing on your car. it will look good when you're done, but it is a huge PIA to do. i would try the armor all first.

you got 160k and dont care about the car no more?? i got mine in july with 258,000 and thus far have put the 2000 17"s on it,put the SE badge from a 2000 on top of the right side taillight, shortened the shifter, cleared the rear turn signals...and im just gettin started,i think my eng was replaced or something because the car is very strong and runs great, but as for the subject at hand, all 4 of my door molding are yellowish and my front bumper, driver fender, and driver door are turning yellowish also, does anyone have a good pic of their max w/o the moldings on it?

It's got 160000 and the engine still runs perfect. I'm gonna buy a 4th gen in a couple months so I'm not really worried about modding it.
