Is the manual shifter supposed to do this??

I've only driven my new car a few hours total so far, but one weird thing I've noticed is that whenever I apply power (in say, 4th gear, and going down the road) I can feel the shifter move slightly further into the shift gate.

Say I'm in 4th gear going down the road around town. If I give it a little gas I can feel the shifter move further rearward into the shift gate just a fraction of an inch (like it's pulling it "more into the gear"). Then when I let off the gas it pops forward again. It's not a big movement, but enough that I notice and it feels weird because my old car didn't do this. Can't remember if it happens when I apply power after cruising or lift-throttle, but is this normal? Or should I start sweating?

my shifter does this too, seems to only be in 4th..or at least i only notice it in 4th. i figured if i drive it real hard and it doesnt get any worse, its normal..i havent had anything change yet since i bought the car in july.
also, when you let off the gas does the shifter move "out" of the gear a little? mine does. i dont know what to say except mine does the same thing. maybe matt93se could help us out because i think he just had his tranny rebuilt.....

Yeah the shifter is connected to the rear of the transmission, so as the mounts flex through acceleration and deceleration, the shifter will move a bit and this is perfectly normal.

You guys might want to take your hand off of the shifter while driving around, it's a bad habit that you should avoid. Basically when you rest your hand on the shifter you can put extra pressure on the shift forks and cause increased wear on them. Seriously, my mechanic can tell all about people's driving habits by looking at their trannys....

Just a thought...
