hey all i got another question more like a poll. my alt died. but before it did, heres what happened. i pulled out of my spot, the radio didnt work when i accelarate, hm the wire must be touching something....3 miles later on the highway, the wiper went looney, the clicking noise like crazy, idiot lights blinking, and the smell of something burnt. i pull over car starts but get towed. the fuses were all burnt. changes the alt, brake lites/reverse lites burnt, the window doesnt go up, the wipers dont work, the rpm thing on zero, dash lights nada, only 3 idiot lights work, speedo is dead too (hardly worked) but now its on 160mph.... so mech tells me, need the window switch not the motor, the dash fixed.
any body out there with a similar prob???
he said there must of been a short or the alt itself killed everything. If its not one thing its the other, im not giving up though after an engine rebuilt and tranny, ITS gonna stay alive...Well sorry its been a long post... but its good to read.
ne one selling their window switch? wiper motor? dash? lol

That's weeeeeird. only thing I can think of is that the alternator itself shorted out and caused some nasty stuff, or that the voltage regulator went haywire and started sending high voltage (above 20V- good alternators put out about 14.4V) through the system.. that's the only thing I know of that could fry that much stuff at once..

if the alternator just quit working, the battery would just slowly die as you drove, then the car would just suddenly shut itself off and not start again... the fuses blowing and wiper motor and etc is something really weird.. only thing that I know that COULD do something like that is high voltage. reverse voltage is the only other thing that could do that much damage- which can't happen the way our electric system is designed.

sooo, I'd replace the alternator and check the battery to make sure it's still good, then start rebuilding from there.
the gauges may be fixable- try pulling the cover off them and turning the speedo needle back to 0 with your finger, then start it up and drive and see what happens. (sounds easy, but takes 30 minutes of pulling your dash apart to get to the gauges).

wow such fast responces hehe..did change the alt, drove it back home seemed ok, yeah he said something about overcharging the stuff and fried it all, the car turned back on and stuff, but with the lights on, didnt turn back on. thanx for the input, the batt is good. what other parts die after 12 yrs? i've changed basicaly everything, dont tell me the main computer goes too
