The automatic blues

I love everything about my GXE except for its automatic transmission. The first time I parked it I couldn't figure out how to get the key out of the ignition (I simply jerked up the hand brake and shut off the motor in Drive.) I release an imaginary clutch at every greenlight. On more than one occasion while coming to a stop I've stomped the left corner of the fat brake pedal thinking it was the clutch. I've had the car for 3 years now.

I've considered trading, but everytime I look at another car of similar vintage, I think damn I'd probably have to fix a dozen things to make this car run as good as my Max, my Max is showroom clean, and it has sentimental value (I once lived in it.) Trading it just seems stupid.

Does anyone else feel this way? Whats the cure? I would be willing to pay the money to have it changed into a manual, because dropping 4k into my Maxima is better than dropping 4k into a used car, but I don't think a shop crazy enough to do this could be relied apon to do it well.

Comments anybody?

evrsince I went to FL and got to drive my friend's 5spd Eclipse GST....I've been pretending my GXE has a cluth and I keep my right hand on the shifter....man talk about 5spd envy! but I love my auto, it came in very handy this afternoon in that 20 mintue traffic jam!

anyways heres a auto--->5spd conversion done on a 4th gen:

yes i feel the same way about my auto, sometimes i wish it was 5spd to free the extra power that is robbed by the torque converter =(

dahhh but oh well saving every cent i can get to save enough money to buy parts to convert to 5spd .. some day .. some day

I dunno.... I kinda LIKE my automatic. Yeah, I DO miss the fact that a stick will yield additional power because YOU dictate the shift points, but I'd give that up in a heartbeat if I had to commute in heavy traffic every day! But then again, you 5sp guys/gals can probably kick my @$$ because your left leg is a lot bigger/stronger!!

i was in your boat,

I bought My maxima cuz i liked the way it looked and didnt
really care
about stick or not stick. And yeah shifting in my friends
car was cool but I didnt really care. then I went to test drive a max just for fun. it was a 89 se 5spd. that did it for me. then about a month ago I bought an 92 se 5spd for $300 ( front end damage but still runs perfect. and i was going to sell the GXe anyway and get a 5 spd but this was perfect so mabey it will cost 2gs to fix and ill sell my slow *** gxe for 4gs and have 2000 for insurance. when im 40 i probably wont want a stick but now i do and i got one
now if only someone would by my damn gxe I could fix the SE and put it on the road.

Thanks. You know... when the procedure is laid out in steps like that, it doesn't seem so bad. I need to get one of those guys thats done this on a 3rd gen to give me a parts list, then I can start approaching local mechanics with my plan.
