Cold Engine Dies When Put in Gear?

So anytime after i start my car after its been sitting for a while (hours or overnight or after school) and i put it in any gear it just dies. so i have to let it warm up for a minute or put it in gear and give it some gas. It dies out especially in drive, sumtimes after warming it up itl be fine in reverse but die in drive. One i drive like half a block and stop its completely fine. so whats wrong? Fluid in the trans not circulating when its cold? Also it seems hard to shirt outta park when its cold? any suggestions or help would be nice.. thanks guys.

If you are sure you have no vacuum leaks, your IACV is working and engine bay connectors have been individually cleaned and checked for proper connection, check this thread ............... and I sure hope its not your situation too

the VG engine is notorious for that. mine used to do the same thing as well when I had a GXE. the only remedy I had for it was to rev it up to about 2000rpm and run it for about 15 seconds. then let off the gas and put it in gear and you'll be okay.

the automatics have a screen-type filter inside the tranny, but I doubt that's much of your problem.

when you say it's hard to get out of park, are you stopping on a hill when you do this? If so, it's the strain of the car on the tranny that's causing the difficulty in shifting. next time before you shut the car off, pull up the parking brake, shift the car into neutral, let off the brakes and let the parking brake take the weight of the car, THEN shift into park and shut off the car. this puts the weight of the car on the brakes instead of the parking pawl inside the transmission. it'll be easier to shift out of park when you get back in the car.
be sure to shift out of park before you disengage the parking brake- or be sure to have you foot on the brake when you let the parking brake off. if the car rolls back onto the transmission gear while it's in park, you've completely FUBARd the whole process.

What Matt warned about can also be accomplished on a flat surface - drive up, stop with foot-brake while in gear, pull up handbrake, engage park and only then release foot-brake ..........................

The locking pawl in the box gets engaged while the drive-train is basically "wound-up" in that situation and upon trying to engage a gear while the foot-brake and parking-brake is engaged when wanting to move after that, you need to basically force the locking pawl form it slot/hole against a lot of friction caused by the "wound-up" components

I had same problem few years back. It the pemp dropps below 15, I had this problem. Few months later, my tranny died. I spent about 1,500 to fix my tranny. then this problem also disappeared. I do not know why.

Can i change the valve gasket myself? how hard is it? and motor mounts seem out of the reasonable price range and if thats the case i can live with it. It doesnt do it always though, yesterday it didnt and today it didnt but sometimes it does.

ok kid I'm tired of seeing you go without these motor mounts. i took these out of an 89 gxe I'm parting out. These mounts are in good condition, not brand new, but good. Just pay for the shipping and there yours. Just finish school and make something outta yourself. These were heading for craigslist but I'll hold on to em a day or two

I do this religiously. the difference in shift ease is noticeable.

Mine used to do the exact same when my timing was super off. Lets see if now that your timing is at near spec it still does it.
