VG compression ratio

I've noticed North American literature states the VG Maxima has 9.5:1 compression while overseas literature always states 10:1. They also give a 170hp rating overseas, but this may be due to a lack of catalytic converter.

Does anyone know how the compression would be higher without major changes to the engine?

Compression ratio means exactly that - IE - the ratio of the maximum uncompressed volume of the cylinder with the piston at BDC, to the maximum compressed volume of the cylinder with the piston at TDC .....................

No external item can influence that ratio - by definition ......................... any difference in locale specific numbers must therefore imply "major" differences in engine mechanics

..................... alternatively - the people posting those number don't know what they are talking about if all the motors came out of the same factory off the same production line.

Here in South Africa, the VGs don't have a cat, O2, EGR and a few other bits .................. how the ECU has been tuned to cater for this situation is unknown, but HP will most certainly differ because of all of those components.

i think his catconv comment was specifically about the HP rating, not the compression ratio.

The plot thickens. Actually US literature states 9:1.

OK I'm geeking on this:

9:1
US haynes manual
US owners manual
just about every engine building site

10:1
UK brochure,
http://www.globalcar.com/datasheet/N...san_Maxima.htm
http://www.bignissans.org.uk/

I think anyone printing 10:1 is indeed wrong. All the engine building sites say 9:1. So the extra hp overseas is due difference in emission equipment. I guess I answered my own question.

Yeah well .............. the UK guys may be using haggis drippings iso head-gaskets so that may explain their higher CR

VG30E= 9:1 CR with 160hp
VE30DE= 10:1 CR with 190hp

Nuff said.

the top UK link also says it's got a longitudinal FF setup. oops. We don't drive 300Ms.

VE has VLSD and the same or greater torque output than the VG, it wins that battle too

VG has friends in low places. Well, torque that is. Max torque is 182 from 2800 to 3200. VE is 190 @ 4400.

low torque doesn't help a tractor pull.
those motors spin very high for diesels

oh i wasn't arguing that. I was just putting numbers out since the "as much or more" was a bit uncertain. that and i got to paraquote Garth Brooks...

I love my VG, 30 horses couldn't drag me away. Yes HP wins every contest.

Here's a link that I really liked about hp and torque, pretty basic to most people here, but might be good for a lurker out there.
