Anybody have HD Radio in their car (or home)?

 

thought about it, but I'm too cheap

 

I have it, when it works its a beautiful thing. Any specific questions about it?

How is the reception? Is it as strong as regular FM/AM? Sound quality?

A lot of regular stations are broadcasting in HD nowadays from what I researched, but is the broadcast content on HD actually different? Or do you get the same broadcast, but just clearer?

Does it cut out a lot?

 

I'm about 60 miles from NY city where most stations broadcast from and the reception is generally very good, it goes in and out I find in hilly areas, but if you're closer to the broadcast point I'm sure that is less of an issue. The FM quality is significantly better, you can really tell the difference when it changes from analog to digital, and AM is a whole new world, it really sounds so much better, good enough to consider being able to listen to music on the AM bands.

As far as content goes, you still receive the same broadcast as everyone else, and more stations as far as I know are adding additional stations that broadcast on the same frequency, so you get variety there. Another nice thing is seeing song titles and artists on your HU, even though I know it isn't HD radio exclusive, it was something I wasn't used to.

I'm glad I spent the few extra bucks to get it.

Hmm, that station isn't available where I live [on Long Island] but I'm at school in Poughkeepsie, so I'll have to tune into that.

 

HD radio is good for me, then again I was listening at my school.

I sadly don't have the Maxima with me I'm going through withdrawal, I havn't driven since the end of August!

 

I know someone who has it in there car and it doesnt work at all in parking garages

 

Once you listen to an HD radio, you will never listen to a regular FM or AM again.

 

Meh. Thats what custom CDs are for, and Ipods and similar. My mom had one and it was cool but w/e.

CDs and Ipods suck, they limit you to what you can hear. Radio plays a much broader spectrum of music, exposing you to songs that you would otherwise have never heard.

I agree with internetautomar. I think that HD radio has some growing to do before it is really worth spending money on. There aren't that many stations broadcasting it yet, but once it catches on, I think that it will do to FM the same thing that FM did to AM. For now though, there just aren't that many stations broadcasting it, and the receivers are still a bit pricey. I stick with MP3's on CD, and a portable MP3 player for now.

 

we actually have 36l HD stations here (chicago) including some decent ones.
when I can find an HD radio for >$75 I'll think about buying one

 

Pfff I never do listen to regular radio, it sucks. Kiss FM in Chicago sucks dingleberries!

Like Alex said, CDs (MP3 of of course) and iPod...<3 iPod but durability of it is dingleberry.

Only time I listen to radio is when looking forward to expand my library..but then I realize they're replaying a song for the millionth time that hour. So thats when the internets and TV come in to play.


Just to make sure I understand....XM/Sirius; are they the same as HD radio? cuz my head unit says XM ready

 

nah, sirius/xm are satelite.
hd is transmitted by fm.
i do not like xm, i prefer sirius.
but any satelite is a big upgrade to fm.
haven't heard hd-radio yet, so no comment on that.

 

HD radio is the same normal broadcast radio stations, but digital.

XM/Sirius are satellite, while also digital are subscription based, no commercials, lots and lots of stations

also, john, you may want to check and see if there is a hd kit for your head unit.
it may not say hd-ready, but ive seen satelite and hd kits for radios not labeled such.

Yea it wasnt a cheap headunit there probably is a kit, I've got the iPod interface for it and can charge, control ipod and display info on headunit...pioneerelectronics.com list price still shows as $570 USD thats the price when it came out...I'm sure its less now.

oh well, I'm happy with what I've got so far
