Fixing manifold studs...

so i got the parts today from Martin nissan in skokie and most likely saturday i will be replacing/drilling out the broken studs from the front exhaust manifold on a VG. It was 40 bucks for the gasket and 6 studs. They didnt have nuts or washers in stock so i went to ACE and got some nuts. Do i need the washers? Also any tips on the best way to go about this? Also if my manifold is slightly warped ( i dont know how long its had a broken stud (for now just the bottom drivers side is broke) but im sure the manifold is warped, so can i just use the nissan gasket and some exhaust gasket paper and trace out a 2cd one to fill any gap having just one wouldnt fill?

Yes, you definitely need the washers, the holes in the manifold are quite a bit larger than the studs.

You can count on the manifold surface being warped. Any competant machine shop can true the mating surface for you, it should be done this way instead of band-aiding it with extra gasket material.

I took off the exhaust on my parts car a few days ago. The studs were so rusted that 2 of them just snapped off. Having a parts car is pretty cool though. I shredded like half of it with a circular saw, since I stripped it of all the parts that I need.

yea a parts car is cool. These studs areforthe parts car as it is running better now and the electronic problems have been fixed. Its got every option (cept digital dash if that was availible in 92) so i want the manifold fixed. plus its good practice. Can i get the washers at any hardwarestore? Generics are fine? And ive never rezised one before so il try that out soon.

Drill slow, straight and not to deep cause you will see oil leaks coming out of the threads later....And you might wanna meet a new friend named Anti-seize cause those generic hardware nuts and washers (unless they are Stainless) are never coming back off unless they bring the threads with them!

Uhh... regular nuts may or may not be the greatest idea.

The OEM nuts have some kind of polymer on the inside, and it is in a slightly oval shape. I think they are supposed to settle in better once they get up to operating temperature.

Yeah, I would definitely get the OEM nuts. They are guaranteed to last and never work lose without anti-seize. Plus, anti-seize could burn off over time with the extreme temps the exhaust manifolds reach.

And as Mike said, they are oval shaped. They will stay put without any problems. Why try something different when Nissan has already done the engineering needed and provides the correct replacement parts?

Edit: And yes you need the washers Nissan sells. Just order some parts online if your local dealership doesn't have them.

well kevin, you dont need studs, God bless seafoam, it just reassured you that you need y-pipe /flex pipe and not studs.

thanks for the help with my all new ricer blue instrument panel LEDs.

yea john its nice knowing its not the studs, but this thread was for fixing the studs on the red max. So at onep oint i thought both of my maxs had broken studs but now its jsut the one. I might look into a new y pipe soon who knows its really not bad right now, also i need the support bracket that is welded to the y pipe and then the frame right around the flex, mines broken in half.

get a better soldering gun and next time it wont take years to do the leds.

p.s. nice idea using the seafoam john
