I wonder what it takes to mold up a hood and cast it either in fiberglass or CF. Of course, CF seems to be a little harder to come by and probably takes a lot more skill and/or experience. Reason I ask is my Dad does fiberglass molding for a living and is thinking to move a satellite workshop down here to Florida so I can help him with a big job he just got down in Orlando. He's up in Ohio but would fly down to set me up. Maybe I could learn and do something for the Max with my new found skills.

Whatya think?

fiberglass isn't tough to do.
CF OTOH is tougher to deal with.

Who said anything about stock!? I was thinking R34 front end conversion myself! But, of course, stock would be nice too

A CF mold needs to be cooked for hours under extreme temperatures, requires a decent amount of skill and special tools.

I just bought one on eBay for $300 SHIPPED!! YAY!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=190214639387

I just had to brag.... I never thought I'd buy one but for a price that good....meh why not. It should go well with the metallic white pearl I'm painting the car this summer.

Nice grab! Great price! But damn it would look so nice on my black car.
I'm guessing you say $300 with shipping?

Wow, lucky guy you are. Congrats. Somethings different about it though. I never knew CB hoods look like that underneath. Judging by the pics, you can attach hood struts on.

My friends were in my driveway yesterday telling me how lucky I was. I caught a full leather interior in near new condition for $200.00, a full lip kit for $200.00 and a plug and play HID kit for free. I'm nowhere near as lucky as this dude however those cf hood are hard as hell to come by for third gens. Congrats.

they will fly up and be dangerous. they are designed for a certain weight of hood, a weight which you no longer have. so you'd have to reposition them so that the arm motion was much more relaxed, or get weaker struts, or adjustible ones.

Make sure you get some hood pins before you install the Cf hood. I drove mine for about a week without pns and would notice that it wanted to lift. I wouldn't trust the stock center latch. It could rip out and destroy your hood and windshield.

Nice grab by the way. Welcome to the club.

I'd like to thank all the little people that made this possible.

That's good to know because I was debating hood pins. Will I have to drill into the hood because that scares me

I think the guy in the eBay ad means Fiber Images and not 'Carbon Images'. That's definitely the exact same hood I had.

They're definitely not worth the $800 or so us original guys ended up paying, but for the price you paid it's not a bad deal. Beware though, the 'clear coat' on mine started to flake off and turn yellow within a few months :rolls eyes:

BTW - all these carbon fiber hoods with 'clear coats'... what a joke. GM spent years developing a proper clear coat for the new Z06, and it costs something like $1000+ for a few pints.. so what does that tell ya about these ricer hoods..

Yes you will have to drill the hood, scared me too. Just use the the old tried and true measure thrice and drill once method, you will be fine.

remember to use masking tape when you drill.

So you think I should get the hood re-cleared before I install it? I'm painting the car soon and can get it done while I do that.

Also, I noticed that the back side of the hood is almost like raw carbon fiber, while the front has a crappy clear coat applied to it. Should I try to drill from top to bottom, or the other way around? I'm assuming top to bottom.

top to bottom for sure - drill it from underneath and you'll shred as it pokes through the surface.

top to bottom and use masking tape to drill through. it keeps the weave together.
