CV Boots

Does anyone have any advice for changing CV boots? Is it better to do it yourself or to have a dealer do it? A shop said they'll replace the whole axle for $125. Would it be better for me to just do the boot or replace? And how about handling the replacement myself? Thanks

unless the axle is damaged there is no reason to replace it , boots are no big deal just replace it when you can the sooner the better.....

Re: CV Boots

[ If the joint is making noice ie loud clicking when car is turning hard right and or left then it is probably time to change the whole axle. From my experience with other vehicles this is a job where the labor to replace the boot is equal to the labor costs to replace the axle.

As Slacky sez, as long as yours is not "clicking" (5mph tight turn) joint should still be good. REPLACE boot asap. $125. rebuilt shafts are c h e e p and dont hold up over the long run. Get a quality boot. OE kit runs about $40.

$55 per side plus a $50 core charge per side that they return to you when you send your core back.

So $110 for both + $100 in core charge, unless you send the core first.

The $125 they quote is probably labor only, or just labor plus the boots. But labor to do the boots is probably the same as replacing the whole thing.
