VE SSSIM

I'm thinking about removing the "shelf" in my VE's IM plenum to gain some extra top end power. For those of you that don't know, the VQ35 guys do this and gain ~12whp in the higher rpms, but they lose some low end power. Has anybody done this before? What do you guys think about this?

Lot of work, use a 5spd manifold

If you want to be insane, smooth out the casting in the runners (or the whole thing if you want :eek3: )

It shouldn't be too much work. I have plenty tools for grinding and cutting metal.

Either manifold would work because they both have the shelf. The 5spd manifold just has a moving plate to simulate one common plenum for all 6 runners to increase top end power. The plate is closed for low end power and it opens for top end power.

Instead of being insane, maybe I'll just send it to extrude hone.

BTW, this is top secret information that's why it's called the SSIM (Super Secret Intake Manifold).

yes, but the 5spd one has a rear access cover where the automatic does not

I knew about it when Matt first started doing it to VQ35's, it's only secret because most people on this forum aren't familiar with finessing motors. It's essentially the difference between a single and dual plane intake manifold for a small block pushrod V8, except the results aren't as great.

Yes, but if I were to do it, I'd cut off the rear piece off, remove the shelf, and then weld a flat piece of aluminum back over the hole.

I was looking at my extra upper plenum and the design is horrible. It would be awesome if I could somehow make on 00VI fit on a VE.

I knew about it when matt first started doing it too. I just thought that it was funny because nobody could figure out what he had done to the IM that made him so much power. Then people started calling it the SSIM. lol.

don't forget to notch the dual plane divider to pick up a couple more ponies

Wouldn't you have to basically cut the thing in half, take what ever you want out. Then weld it back together.

I thought it was Secret Sauce as well (I do alot of lurking in the all motor/turbo sections).

Oh and 505 I have a VE-5 IM laying around if your interested.

It'd be pretty cool to see a dyno difference between the two. Do VEs fall off near/at redline? I thought they had pretty good top end.

Yeah, I'd like to a see a dyno comparison as well. Maybe I'll do just that.

I don't think that they fall off much at all near redline, but if you extend the rev limit, I'm sure that there's some power to be had.

wouldn't a jeremy-style custom IM work better on a VG though? granted it's more work...

Yeah, if you're boosted. Although, a proper custom NA manifold should make some nice gains.

Wouldn't it be easier just to use the Auto Ve manifold?

I was kind of thinking the same thing, if I were to cut open the manifold and weld it back together. It'll be a pita either way.

I just really want an 00VI

For the VG's, just try to fit the pathfinder IM under the hood.
