How Is The Rear Spoiler Held On?

i went to open my trunk and the d-side pulle3d away from the lid. it looks like double sided tape there. what about the middle were the 3rd light is. is there screws there or more tape? didnt feel like pulling the inside liner. afraid ill bust all the little tabs.

"tabs" on the outsides, screws on the inside. the spoiler has a metal bracket (thingie)that is prone to rusting out. the double sided tape is probably a previous owners attempt to fix the problem...
try using more double sided tape as a temp fix.

since a new spoiler is so friggin expensive, somebody on here had a shop fix it with windshield adhesive or something.

its a frequent problem, like vtcs or window regulators(maybe not as frequent, but every 3rd gen at *my* jy has the problem except one, maybe.)

ya the freaking tow truck guy had to pull my car back to let me steer it up to the tow rig and he PULLED ON MY SPOILER that i installed this past.. whenever i put it on.. sunday! That pissed me off. tho he did pull on the center i was scared as hell that he was going to rip it off by putting a whole 250lbs of force on the little 5mm studs. the back edge of the left outer mount came up b/c the spoiler was somewhat twisted.. so the right side went on well in the back but the front is sticking up.. and the front of the left side is on solid but the back peeled up. i put most of my bodyweight on the left side of the spoiler to try and keep the back down, and laid on top of it for a good 15 minutes.

see? it doesn't sit exactly perfectly and the front tips are up a little bit too, but you can't see it here. (that's my friend's goofy mug.. not me) and i swear that brakelight isn't actually out. I religiously check all 30 external light filaments for function every 2 weeks. at least i think it's 30.

The best thing to do. Save yourself a bunch of time and trial and error. NOTHING YOU DO WILL SAVE YOUR FACTORY TRUNK SPOILER. Now after we accept that we can move on to a practical solution. What made me most happy? I went to a few junkyard and found a trunk spoiler from a 93 honda accord(the sedan one is nice but the coupe one had the leds that go all the way accross). I then took the car the wing and some cash to a good body man and he painted it, mounted it and hooked up the led brake lite. Looked kinda sick. Really.

If you are wanting to replace, check this out....

Personally, I like the leds in it better than the stock unit.

They don't. A friend of mine already found that one out.

Do they make spoilers in anything other than foam? I saw a 3rd gen Maxima on my campus that seemed to have a hard spoiler. It doesn't seem to be made of foam. However it has a great paint job so I don't know if that contributes to its durability or not. I suppose that I could remove a sample and find out that way, although I don't know how well he would like that...

Yeah, I debated on going with the ebay one for a while, but wasn't gonna take the chance.

i am considering a spoiler-less trunk lid. its easier to put an aftermarket spoiler on later with no predrilled holes. and finding a oem spoiler is expensive.

Whats hard is finding one in good enough condition to re use.

Ive always had an idea of gluing a new bolt to the ends of the spoiler, something like 2 10mms, and then drilling 2 new holes in the trunk lid. That way it actually holds the spoiler from the inside.

I have to wait untill its warmer though, as I have a few hail dents to fix from last year.

Yeah, if you have a common color you could probably find a GXE lid at a junkyard or something of the sort. There are NO pearl maximas around here so I had my parts car lid refinished and painted. I'd feel bad if I put an aftermarket wing on now, it's so perfect...I wouldn't wanna ruin his work... hah

I bought the ebay one, quality is ok, but unlike the advertisment it is not a factory replacement. It has an LED light and requires a decent amount of custom work to mount. One thing I do like is it uses all bolts as opposed to the strange mounting the factory one uses. The problem is how to fill the massive holes the old one left.

Is it foam?

No, it isn't foam. I'd say it is probably plastic. (not too sure on the material) It is also hollow so it weighs much less than the factory one. That spoiler weighs more than you would think.(factory that is)

How much do the "hollow plastic" ones run?

I think the link is dead, at least it doesn't work for me...

But to answer your question... they're around $80 + $50 shipping.

I think that would be a better investment to pay for a plastic one rather than the foam. Does anyone experience a color change after a time? I recall seeing Maxima's in the boneyard that had a particularly faded and dull spoiler (and this was a pearl white color as well). Would this be due to lack of detailing or are they doomed to do that?
