What to do? (opinions please)

OK, a friend of mine owes me money and he is broke.

I can have my choice of a couple of things.

First, a set of wheels for the Maxima.

They are ADR Sokudo 17x7 +42 Gold with polished lip. Three wheel are brand new. The fourth wheel has some scratches. He had a Subaru (the other bolt pattern is 5x114.3) and it was wrecked. He salvaged one wheel that just had some scratches and bought three new ones. The damaged wheel has no bends of dings in the metal. The other three are still in the original boxes, never installed.

I don't know if I like gold wheels on my car, I would rather paint them black or dark gunmetal. That would cost me maybe $100 or so, plus I need tires.

pic of scratched wheel:

OR, I can take a motorcycle. The motorcycle is a 1970 Honda 175. It has all of the parts and nothing is damaged or broken. It has been sitting a while. It runs, but it needs to be cleaned up and probably the carb rebuilt. It also needs a new exhaust pipe. That one is rusted at the opening. It also needs to be titled and registered (over $100 total).

Motorcycle:

Soooo....what should I do?

motorcicle. Rims are OK but need work and tires to look really good. And the motorcicle will get better mpg possibly. Might want to research the mpg thing.

How ever if you get the motorcicle, you'd probably drive the max even less, correct?

I like the rims you have now, and the vehicle you have now, so I wouldn't take either to use. Maybe choose the one that you could sell for more and get the cash that way?

the bike... less money invested to make it worth your while. and if you decide you want wheels, later, you can sell the bike (ebay: "Honda 175", and look at the motorcycles...)
edit: (also look up "ADR Sokudo 17". they come in sets of 4)

Wheels = decrease in value. Plus they fit a car you barely even drive

Vintage motorcycle = increase in value and would probably give you more bang for the buck when using it.

But I don't know what these Hondas go for

motorcycle all of them have rising value once running due to our current gas price situation.
those wheels don't look like anything special so they are a depreciating asset.
Depending on how much the person owes you I would ask for both. I'm sure the value on either one is overated in his mind

The motorcycle is worth maybe $400 or so.

The wheels are worth maybe the same. They are a complete set. One is scratched a little, but not damaged.

keep in mind, it will cost me probably a total of $300-$500 to license, title and fix the motorcycle (maybe more). Plus, I have to get a motorcycle endorsement. That's about the same as tires for the wheels.

I don't know if those motorcycles really increase that much in value. I guess it could if gas prices keep going up. A guy at work has a similar bike with a bigger engine (1971 CL 450) and he gets 60+ mpg. He paid $500 for his and it is nicer than this one.

You speak the truth, but I don't think I could squeeze both out of him.

initially, he wanted $1200 for the bike and I showed him listings on ebay and CL. I couldn't find a single CB175 for more than $800.

Cliff, weren't you selling the max? lol

But I say probably motorcycle. Unless you can work a deal to get both then take the rims and the cycle.

those wheels are worth about $200 tops. that's still 4x what I paid for a similar set a couple years back.

people doing barter ALWAYS think their crap is worth more than realistic value.

Guy sounds like a jerk IMHO. If he thinks that stuff is worth that much, then why doesn't he sell it for that much and pay you back?

Nah, he is cool. He just doesn't know what stuff is worth. He owes me money for helping him sell stuff on CL and for some other things. He isn't too good with computers, so he pays me to list his stuff on CL and ebay. I think he owes me about $300. No big deal.

He is good with construction and stuff. He owns five rental houses and takes care of them. He loaned me a paint sprayer and some ladders when I painted my house. A lot of crap he gets is trade for his labor. Right now, one of his houses is vacant and he wrecked his Ridgeline, so he is short money because the insurance hasn't paid him for the Ridgeline yet.

actually i have no problem spending money when I have it.

I just picked the wheels off craigslist for $50. I was just lucky enough to catch the guy quick when I bought them.

Life is about timing, just ask any VG owner what happens when they don't change their timing belt

you are right about timing. You seem to have good timing when it comes to finding cheap stuff! haha

I do the same thing. I sell a lot of junk on ebay. I have found some yard sale treasures and turned them into lots-o-cash.

Well unless you're strapped for cash, there's the answer. Wait until the insurance is paid and he's not strapped. Get cash or gold. Gold is good ;^)

I would give my friend time. I am not big on bartering. I like cash. If someone is a friend, they deserve a break. Heck, it is only $300. We have all wasted more than that on stupid purchases, a good night of drinking, trying to impress women, etc...

You guys are kind of missing the point here. I kind of LIKE these two items, but not sure which one I should try to get. I thought it would be nicer to take some crap off his hands than hound him for cash.

I put this in the 3rd gen section because I wanted opinions on the wheels.

I am not in need of the money and me getting paid by him is not really the problem. He will pay me later on if I want cash.

He had these items and I kind of like the bike and I thought the wheels would be kind of cool if I painted them dark.

I was considering one or the other. I thought each was actually worth more than he owed me and it would be sort of doing him a favor. He got the bike in trade and three of the wheels were bought from insurance money, so he is into them for basically nothing.

I saw that bike, but the one on ebay has 900 miles on it and it is one of the nicest ones I have seen. The one I am looking at has I think 12k miles.

I sold them, though.

Brian, I saw those things on ebay. I figured they were worth more. Not many 17s cost less than $100 new

I might just wait a while and have him give me some money after all. I appreciate all of the help.
