Oh Wonderful Bose.....

ok i may have posted on here before regarding my stereo but ive discovered new problems with it....

the stereo i have: stock Bose cass/FM-AM on 1992 SE

the general problem: driver side speakers (both F and R) are lower/quieter than the passenger sides....to make them sound even the balance **** needs to be set about 3/4 to the driver sides...in a nutshell, the passenger side speakers are more dominant than the driver sides.........this is affected more i find from my using a car kit in the tape deck plugged into a discman (compared to using the radio) when i first start driving (like after the car sits for awhile) and play the discman all is fine but then it acts up as i drive for some time and play the discman..ill get these thumping and static noises particularly in the driver door speaker and sometimes ill hear road noises through it also. Originally i thought it was the speakers alone but now i think something may be up in the deck because the speakers act up more when i use the discman as opposed to the radio.

i DONT want to get a complete set of aftermarket speakers and deck because of price...i either want to get this bose fixed or find another set from another max at a junk yard maybe..or possibly any of you may have any sets for sale...?

also, if i dont find a bose set(speakers and/or deck) from a 92, would sets from a 89, 90, 91, 93, or 94 fit? (preferrably sets with CDs..i can cut out that pop out cup holder tray if needed)

~thanx to any who help

My guess is that your amps are going bad since the speakers rarely do. I have the exact same problem you do with the passenger side being louder than the driver's. I bought some front amps from a board member and put them in, and it helped for a while but I think that the passenger amp was stronger than the driver, so nothing really changed. In short, you have some options:
1) www.davescoolstuff.com --> good guy and trustworthy.
2) get a new system (but you said you didn't want to)

As far as speakers/amps and decks from other years fitting your car, I've heard that the 89-91 amps don't work as well for 92+ cars. Speakers should probably fit. The decks should probably be okay too.

There's several places online that will repair the amps for you.

www.carstereohelp.com

is one place. I haven't used any of the places yet, but my front passenger speaker is out and the rear driver side is going out soon. They charge approximately $100 each speaker to repair and update the amps and/or $365 to do all 4. I think it is a good idea as I feel the sound from the Bose are decent. Well, the imaging is great, but the highs have something left to be desired. The bass is decent as well when all the speakers are working.

My head unit is going out too, which means I'll probably need to get a replacement head unit. Probably like '94 double din unit with tape and cd in one...

Similar problem

Went through the FAQ's, but didn't hear of one like mine. First off, a little history. I have a 1989 Se with a 5 speed. When I got the car two years ago it had the stock stereo tape deck with a stock CD player. Shortly after I got it the whole system fuzzed out on me and I got a new deck in a junkyard. This lasted about 3 months then only the CD player would work. I then finally got ****ed and bought a nice aftermarket unit (sweet) with the adaptor from Car Toys. This worked till about three months ago when I started to hear a faint wine everytime the stereo is on. This has gotten worse to the point where it needs to be replaced. So, if I get this right, my only two choices are getting new amps ($$$) or a whole new system (well speakers). If my assumption is right, how much will this run me? Thanks...

I most recently had the same problem. I had a few people take a look at my scenario and they all gave me the same answer; your Bose amps are shot. Now I, like you, did not want to go out and spend some absurb amount of $$$ for a whole new system (I only needed speakers and an amp). But in the end, my car had no sound, so I replaced the 4 Bose speakers with 4 new Pioneers and i'm happy with them, even though their weak-sounding because I don't have an amp charging them up yet. Hope this helped.
