Reading check engine codes

Anyone have any experience reading codes from the check engine light? I don't know how to do it, or what the codes mean, but I'm sure someone does.

I've been fighting electrical gremlins in the car (92 GXE) for a few weeks now, and while I've got most of them sorted outm this one still baffles me. I can't imagine this being an OBD thing, being the car is almost 10 years old now, so I'm guessing this is a mulitmeter on a socket thing, where one has to read the sweeps to get the code.

Any help here is appreciated.

Thanks!

get yourself a Chilton's or FSM. The directions are in there. The copmputer control is OBD I. It is behind the center console accessed from the pass. side.

I wished I would have checked the group B4 my Haynes manual. I hate that thing. It shows checking the OBD from the driver's side, and is not too descriptive on which siver box it is. When I removed the driver's side panel, I saw 2 boxes, with a smaller one underneath. Anyone can tell me which one? And how to put it into diagnostic mode.

you have to access it from the pass side, you will see a screw on the lower unit (the upper one is auto tranny controller, if you have a 5spd, you only have the ECU there)

Thanks for helping me out w/ that. Using the procedure described in the Haynes the codes were 12 (Mass airflow); 34 (knock); 51 (Fuel Injector); and 23 & 46 This is hoping that I did it correctly. The instructions say to turn on ignition, then turn dial clockwise wait for 3 red lights and then turn counterclockwise. When I turned clockwise I got a series of lights, both red and green simultaneously. When I turned counterclockwise they went off. I just turned back and counted the flashes. Sound about right?
