prove someone wrong....
now i searched found something but too many pages.
today at work a co-worker of mines pulled in a fx45 and revved the engine and he said ohh i bet your maxima can't sound like that.
me: your right but it can sound like a g35.
him: no it can't.
me: stick to what you know and thats buicks.
him: you can't get it to sound like that...why are you lying to yourself.
me: yes you can there's a member that has a 89-94 maxima that has the exhuast and sounds like a g35.
him: YOU lying.
me: looks like i'm gonna have to prove you wrong AGAIN. then i said outloud to another co-worker...now i gotta go to the org and look pages after pages to prove him wrong.
before we got into it becuase he said vw never made a W8 engine and i told him they did...but for a short time in the passat.
he looked on the computer it showed no w8...so i took it like a man.
till a customer comes in driving a passat....WITH A W8, he felt stupid. lol
now goon9 has done the swap but i can't seem to find the sound clip...does anyone know if he uploaded it??

Yes I have a g35 muffler on my vg. Though it sounds close and is throaty... If you heard my car and didn't know it maxima, you wouldn't Think it was g35. When the car is running again hopefully SOON! I'll get a sound clip.
And no I don't have a spare wheel well... But the weight removed compensates for the weight of the muffler.

For a guy who starts conversations about exhaust sounds, he doesnt seem to know much.
The W8 didnt make it out to other cars, but other W engines were made for many highend VW-group cars.

Our cars have a DOHC V6 and the G35 has a DOHC V6. If you have a similar exhaust, they are going to sound similar.
My car has a GReddy exhaust with a resonator and a Cattman y-pipe. Almost everyone loves the sound and thinks that it sounds much more "exotic" than a Maxima. I get a lot of "it sounds like a tuned Bimmer" or something.
Actually, it is quiet when I drive normally, but when I stomp on it, it has a nice deep sound.
Here is one going up a fairly steep hill:

Here is one going through some tunnels:

In both videos I had the front two windows rolled down. In the one with the tunnels, the moonroof was open, too. I can't remember if it was in the uphill video.

No, a 3 gen VG with a G35 muffler will not sound like a G35. It never will. Neither will a 3 gen VE. The VE might get to sound reasonably similar, but it will sound more like a Z32NA than it will a G35. You might be able to get an overall tone similar to that of a G35, but the WOT growl and basic tone of it will be completely different.
iron block vs aluminum block. yes, it does make a difference.
Cam timing is different. bore, stroke, compression ratio are all different.
Namely the ENTIRE intake and exhaust tracts are completely different designs. they have different natural resonance frequencies and thus will simply sound different. It ALWAYS will.
Until you put a VQ30 or 35 in a 3 gen, it'll always sound different than a G35.
It's just like comparing a Gibson Les Paul to a Fender Strat- They both may be 6 string guitars, but that's where the similarities end. Jimi Hendrix will NEVER sound like Eric Clapton who will NEVER sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn. (Then again, only one of them is still alive, so it's a bit difficult to try...

but for those well-versed in acoustics... can a non-g35 muffler, namely, something totally custom, be fitted to achieve any reasonable tone? Or at least get closer to the G35 sound than a g35 muffler on a vg gets? I heard of one guy whose subaru sounded like an exotic due to super-precise acoustics in a custom muffler setup. didn't ever hear the car tho.Originally Posted by Matt93SE

You can only trust about 2% of what you read on the intarweb, and ish like that isn't it.BUT... anything can be done with enough money and effort and desire.... but for that kind of money and effort and research, don't bother making your car sound like a G35, you can mod the engine with the same money and make it outrun a G35.

no, i heard it from a guy who said he had it done to his subaru. granted i never heard the car, and i don't think the exhaust was tuned to sound like anything in particular... just "exotic". but as i haven't heard the car i can't say one way or the other. but cliff calvin's exhaust is pretty darn nice and sounds a bit european.Originally Posted by Matt93SE

Plus his version of 'exotic' means it's got a high pitched raspy sound that he THINKS sounds like a Ferrari or an Aston.

true, the only thing you can believe that someone tells you about their car is the painfully obvious (has engine. has 4 wheels. runs on gas. requires new brake components every so often. has turbo if they can show you where it is. gets xxmpg if you sit your butt in the car with them and drive 500 miles without stopping for gas.)Originally Posted by Matt93SE

(but we gecha)well good thing i printed it out before you guys posted all of that.
but anyway:
cliff i liked how your exhaust sounds.
right now my car has a small exhaust leak around my flex pipe.
but my muffler on the other hand is weird.
the car basically has a "cat-bac" with no resonator.
so everthing you hear is upfront...that is till you rev the car.
the muffler sounds like a air hose with a lot of psi being let out...and if your next to it while at high rpms oh man it'll annoy/scare the hell out of you.
i'm thinking about cutting it off...

....this just came to me though, know some of you are gonna laugh.
i was searching through some old threads and seen where one member had the muffler from a 90-92 camaro (one inlet two outlet).
now makes me kinda wanna get dual exhaust.
and just in time too, a friend of mines has a 01 pontiac grand am gt.
seeing the dual exhaust muffler is a single piece it, looked flat enough for me not to cut or hammer in my spare area.
all i would have to do is turn it upside down that way the inlet is close to my pipe.
what do you guys think?

there are several years that the camaro used a 1-2 muffler. actually most years it did.
I could climb under the cars and check their sizes, but I probably won't. (we have 68,80,87,89,92,and 95 right now).

don't worry bout it.
i think the muffler for the grand am gt is smaller.
and with that i might lose a lil back pressure.
and i'm sure she'll sound hella better than she does now....

does anyone know if the 4 door g35 exhaust sounds like the 2 door g35 exhaust? getting tired of my magnaflow, i want to put on a stock exhaust, but the oem 3rd gen exhaust is ugly looking.
ehh not really.
one being it's a twin tail pipe and from the looks of it the muffler seems smaller than the g35 2dr.

Remus has some nice sounding mufflers worth checking into. Hard to find good sound clips of third gens with different mufflers on them.

I'd like a recommendation if some one can give it. I'm a bit more conservative on exhaust sound, but I want something different than the stock VE muffler. I like the- well- "burble" that the stock muffler makes... esp. after you start it cold... but you have to be near it to hear it, and I don't think it makes much noise otherwise. I'd like to essentially amplify the sound a bit... maybe slightly deeper.
On the other hand, I don't want interior drone (don't really want to hear it in the car at all unless it's really quiet and the windows are open), I don't want to annoy ANYONE at three in the morning (think after market truck exhaust), and I don't want to sound like I'm *trying* to make noise. I want it to sound "stock"- just not VE stock. And- I like the dual outlets. Not sure I like the latest Z/G coupe sound- but haven't heard it enough.
Anyone?
Where can I hear Remus' sound clips?

I'm on the same boat with what you want, something quiet, but sporty, low tone at idle, but lets you know it's there, and I don't care if it's loud at WOT, as long as it sounds good and not droney. My magnaflow droned like a *****, stay away from those and flowmaster if that isn't what you like. Originally Posted by JC93SE

I've actually thought about having a larger resonator installed in the B-pipe and running with something more aggressive, but you're pretty much having to guess on what it will sound like. Borla and Remus both sound good on pretty much every application I've seen them on, but I haven't heard a third gen specific sound clip.
Another muffler I heard was pretty nice was the 5.5gen (2002-2003) Muffler. It has two channels air goes through, with what seems to be almost like a cutout. When exhaust velocity is low (idle, cruising, low rpms) it will let the exhaust flow out of one hole, but if it is revved, or you gun it, it opens up the other channel and gives it a really nice performance sound or so I've heard. I think the stock sound has a really nice resonance to it, I'd just like it lowered a little, and amplified a tiny bit. If I find any good youtube links of remus or borla I'll throw a link up in here.
edit: borla on 5.5 gen: yum

hmmm...well my "sxe" the resonator is out.
i think it has 2"-2.25" piping. and a muffler that looked like it came off a ford aerostar, chrysler muffler.
i think it's a resonator though because you don't hear anything but air rushin out.
on ebay they have em for $80.

ford aerostars are fun haha.. my dad had one, and back when i was only like 17 i used to drive it all the time, its RWD and i SWEAR those minivans have some odd sorta posi-traction, cause they can rip donuts in dirt like nothing Originally Posted by 1992maximase30

I'll have to keep the 5.5 muffler in mind... I'd have to find one too.
Again, if the stock sound was just a bit more pronounced- not necessarily "louder" or "deeper". Maybe if the stock muffler had a little less sound absorption but the same tone... or like if we could play with an equalizer and pull out some of the extra frequncies and leave the "burble" mostly by itself. Hmmm. Something to play with.
The Borla clip sounds kinda cool... not far off but hard to tell from the clip, and didn't let it idle enough. Has questionable "3 o'clock in-the-morning neighborhood quotient" (I know some car owners don't care). Borla is a few $$ too, isn't it?

that borla love's how it sounds.
but remember jc that 5.5 mightve had the 3.5 engine.
and you just wanna change out the muffler...also he said it's a tad louder than stock.

guys ..Matt is correct. .. no matter what we do .. our cars will NEVER sound like any one the cars built on the Nissan FM platform.( G35,350Z,FX35/45) The design of the engines and the exhaust are sooo different. For example ... Im` form the old school ... A 5.0 mustang w/ 2 chamber flowmasters sounds different from a 3rd.Gen (82-92) Camaro w/ the same muffler. The firing orders, exhaust design and and cam specs tell all. My 92 VG had a 2 chamber on it and so did my 79 Malibu. Both cars ... completely different tones. Ever hear an FX 45 compared to an FX 35 ??? Different tone...Period...lol

I have an automatic ve. We all know when you have an automatic you need a whole different tone than when you runnin a 5 speed. first of all you don't want it to sound too tinny and you don't want too much noise when idling either. Both of which I enjoyed very much in my 5 speed vg. I loved driving that thing cause of the sound. I had a daul ported 3A racing muffler. That muffler looked like I had two of them guns you see on the side of battle cruisers coming from under my bumper. Anyway with the ve auto I opted for a quieter approach with a resonator and an OBX muffler I have to check the model number if anyone is interested pm me and I'll give it to you. Anyway that muffler give me a very nice sound on excelleration but not enough to catch the attention of law enforcement. I was just on the Cross Island Parkway I jumped on the gas and my ve went from about 75 to 95. The short ram K&M alonf with the exhaust made people look around and take notice. I hate driving automatics but this ve isn't boring at all.Originally Posted by Pearl93VE
I've actually thought about having a larger resonator installed in the B-pipe and running with something more aggressive, but you're pretty much having to guess on what it will sound like. Clapton vs EVH vs Jimmy Page then. They're all still alive and kicking.Originally Posted by Matt93SE

Jimi Hendrix will NEVER sound like Eric Clapton who will NEVER sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn. (Then again, only one of them is still alive, so it's a bit difficult to try...
